Alanson Mabie
1832 - March 18, 1910
Alanson Mabie was born in Patunanu County, New York and was a son of Levi and Drusilla (nee Shaw) Mabie. [i] The 1850 Census for Kent Township, Putnam Township, New York lists a Levi (50) and Drusilla (50) Mabie living with four children: Betsy J. (16), John C. (12), Mary E. (9) and George H. (6). Similarly, the 1850 Census for Carmel Township, Putnam Township, New York shows James (21) and Lanson (18) Mabie working at the Nathaniel Shaw farm. Research indicates that Nathaniel Shaw was a brother to Drusilla (Shaw) Mabie so James and Lanson were probably working for their uncle during the 1850 Census.In 1855, Alanson’s parents emigrated from New York State to Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin.[ii] The 1860 Census for Eden Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin lists a Levi (64) and Drusilla (60) Maybee (Mabie) living with two grown children: James (31) and Mary (20). That same Census also shows an Alanson Maybee (Mabie), age 28, living nearby. The 1860 Census for Holland Township, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin shows a George Mabie (16) working for a Russell and Sarah Hyatt. Based on the age, this may have been Alanson's brother. The 1870 Census for Eden Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin again indicates that Levi (75) and Drusilla (70) were living with their sons; James (40) and John (34); their daughter, Mary (30); their daughter-in-law , Almina (15), (Jame's second wife) and a grandson, Edgar (7), (James' son from his first wife). Nearby the same Census lists a Lanson (39) and Ann (31) Mabie living with two sons: John (3) and James (1).
An 1862 plat map for Eden Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin shows that A. (Alanson) Mabie and J. (James) Mabie owned land in Sections 24 and 25 of that township.
An article on James Mabie (Alanson’s brother) indicated that James came to Clark County in 1874 so it is likely that Alanson Mabie also came to Clark County in the 1870s. The 1880 Census for Clark County do not list a Alanson Mabie. However, that Census does show Alanson's brother, John Mabie, (42) living in Hixon Township with his wife, Cerissa (22) and two children: Maud (4) and Leon (10). It also indicates that Alanson's brother, George H. Mabie (36) was living in Thorp Township with his wife, Amanda (36) and three children: Wallis (6), Georgeannie (2) and Alonzo (10/12).
At some point during the 1870s or 1880s, Alanson's wife must have passed away because on January 1, 1888 he married Lucretia (nee Mills) Young, the widow of Nelson H. Young. Also during the 1880s, Alanson's daughter (Phoebe) married Charles Benedict, a son of Adonijah and Clarissa (nee Bryant) Benedict. However, she died shortly afterwards and also believed to buried at York Center Cemetery.
The 1900 Census for York Township, Clark County, Wisconsin shows that Alanson (68) and Lucretia (62) Mabie were living with Lucretia's son, Wally, and his wife, Kate. The 1900 Census also indicates that Alanson's brother James Mabie (70) was living in Greenwood with his son, Warren (27); his sister, Mary (60); and Mary's daughter, Pearl (18). That same Census indicates that Alanson's brother, John Mabie (65) was living in Longwood Township with his wife, Cerissa (45) and his son, Aubra (17). Finally, the 1900 Census lists Alanson's third brother, George Mabie (56), living with his youngest son, Alonzo (20).
Alanson Mabie died in York Township and was buried in the York Center Cemetery per the death notice. The exact location of his grave is not known. However, it is speculated that he may be buried in the same plot (B-1) where Otis Young (one of Lucretia’s sons) is buried.
