John H. Booth was born December 22, 1839 at Rhinebeck, New York and married Angeline C. Fertile, daughter of Lewis Fertile and Julia De Rosa, in about 1862. They had seven children, but by the year 1910, only two of the children were still living. John died in 1919, and both he and his wife are buried in the Greenwood Cemetery.

He fought as a private in the Great Civil War with Co. H, 11th Minnesota Infantry.  He enlisted August 29, 1864 and was discharged June 26, 1865.  His next of kin was registered as Alta B. Hartson (granddaughter) of 88 Delano St., San Francisco, California.  The information for his Veteran's Grave Registration was provided by H. H. Hartson and John Arends of Greenwood, Clark Co., Wisconsin.  He is buried in grave number 2, lot 4 of the "B" section in the Greenwood City Cemetery.

11th Minnesota Infantry

The Minnesota 11th Regiment was organized in August and September 1864 and the men were sent to Ft. Snelling near Minneapolis where they were trained. The original term of service was for three years.  John H. Booth enlisted August 29th.  On September 20th the Regiment, now over 1,000 strong, marched to St. Paul and boarded steamboats for the trip south to La Crosse, Wisconsin. From there they were loaded into boxcars for the journey to Chicago where they were detained for a week while it was feared they would be diverted to fight in the Northwest Indian Expedition in the Dakotas.

John served as the first sexton of the Greenwood Cemetery.
