Kohl honors three area students

U. S. Senator Herb Kohl hosted a luncheon Sunday, April 10, at Chippewa Falls Middle School and honored three area students.

Kohl recognized Adam Enstad of Neillsville High School, Rachel Jensen of Thorp High School and Kaitlyn Suda of Greenwood High School.

The luncheon was held to honor the achievements of west central and northwest Wisconsin students and teachers.

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation and the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation announced March 1 the recipients of $1,000 Initiative Scholarships, Excellence Scholarships and Fellowships.

The luncheon recognized the accomplishments of the area’s outstanding students and educators – 18 teacher Fellowship recipients, 21 Excellence Scholarship recipients and 18 Initiative Scholarship recipients were honored.

Representatives of co-sponsoring organizations (The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools, Wisconsin Cooperative Educational Service Agencies and Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation) and the families and friends of west central and northwest Wisconsin award recipients were scheduled to be part of this program.

The Herb Kohl Foundation Fellowship rewards teachers who have demonstrated superior ability to inspire the love of learning in their students, have motivated others and have provided meritorious service both inside and outside the classroom.

The Herb Kohl Initiative Scholarship was established to recognize students who have demonstrated a high level of motivation to achieve, have shown strong promise for achieving success in college and beyond, have overcome significant personal obstacles or adversity and have not yet received other academic-based scholarships.

The Herb Kohl Foundation issued the $1,000 Excellence and Initiative Scholarship grants to the post secondary institution each student will attend. Each teacher received a $1,000 Fellowship; an additional $1,000 grant was awarded to the teacher’s school for use in innovative educational projects.

Kohl established the Kohl Educational Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program in 1990. To date, the foundation has provided $7.4 million to Wisconsin educators, students and schools. The foundation annually awards 181 scholarships and 100 fellowships throughout the state.

The Chippewa Falls event is one of five regional award programs sponsored by the Herb Kohl Foundation.
