Ridderbusch, Fred & Viola

Fred Ridderbusch, a well known local resident, was born in Birnamwood in 1894. The family moved to the town of Holton, Marathon Co., Wis. in 1906 and lived on several different farms in the township.

In his early years Fred worked on his parents farm in the summer and in area sawmills in the winter. He also worked in what was then the only feed store in Dorchester, just before World War I.

Fred Ridderbusch is a veteran of World War I, serving overseas for a year. He helped organize the Abbotsford National Guard Company in 1920. He held the rank of 1st Lieutenant during the last ten years of his service, resigning in 1933 because of poor health.

He was married in 1922 to Viola Niedhold, whose parents were long time residents of the town of Holton. At the time of his marriage he bought eighty acres of wild land in the town of Holton and later bought another forty acres. This land is located just north of what is now the Sportsman’s Park.

Fred built the buildings on this land as they are today and made a prosperous farm out of the wild land. The Ridderbusch’s have four children: Joyce, Dale, Roy and Neal.

Fred was assessor in the town of Holton for ten years and also served as school clerk, constable and justice of the peace. After moving to Abbotsford in 1957 he also served as village assessor for two years.

He has been very prominent in the affairs of the Abbotsford Sportsmen’s Club, serving as secretary and being one of the leaders in organizing the sportsmen’s recreation area in the town of Holton.
