Memories

As I recall, this shop was to the south and East of the old high school, toward the Gleaner Building, on the south side of the street, but it may have been mid block.  I did business with George on one occasion during October of '56 when I rolled my 1953 Chev and he fixed it up for me.  Allan Wire.

Seliskar's Body Shop is on the same street between Main and the school that my parent's business was. Behind Zion United Church Of Christ is an alley and then the body shop. West of the body shop was Seliskar's house which is kitty-corner from the high school. Directly across the street on the north side was Buker's house.

I can't think of his name but I believe it was one of his workers who took over when he quit. After George's death his wife (I believe also deceased) moved to Minnesota to live with their daughter Marian. I am in contact with Marian as I graduated from high school with her.

Marian was one of my childhood playmates when I was growing up in the store.  And I remember dad always going to visit and chat with George.  I have George's family tree a couple generations as his parents were both Slovenian immigrants.  Mary Urban

Jim Metzke owns that shop today (2010).  He graduated from GHS in 1954 and went into the service.  He started working with George Seliskar when he returned from the Army in 1956 and bought it from Seliskar. I talked with his wife, Judy (Seif) Metzke who graduated with me in 1958.  She said Jim had a heart attack a couple years ago, but still works his shop each day with shorter hours.  Loves seeing the people and keeping busy.

The blacksmith shop west of the pharmacy and kitty-korner from the funeral home was run by Mr. Carl. Don't remember his first name. The UW football star, Harlan Carl, was one of his sons. There was another, Dewey who graduated in 1952. I think Harlan was 1949 with my brother and sister. There was a sister, Marjory, too.  "Dolly" (Urbanz) Qualls.
