Chester Quakenbus

June 10, 1848 - April 3, 1897

An early pioneer of York Township, Chester Quakenbus was born in New York, a son of George Quakenbus[i].  Although living alone at the time of his death, he may have been married since records indicate that a C. A. Quackenbus and A. Lessleyoung were married at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Forest Township, Fond du Lac County on October 23, 1873.  It is believed that Chester Quackenbus then came to Clark County in the 1870s as the 1880 and 1893 plat maps of York Township show a C.A. Quackenbus owning 80 acres of land in Section 34 east of Pray Road.  Per the April 8, 1897 issue of the Republican and Press, Chester Quakenbus committed suicide at the age of 48 by drinking carbolic acid.
