Acker, Jessie Alan (Birth – 24 September 1977)

Mr. and Mrs. David Acker announce the birth of a son, Jessie Alan, born at Memorial Hospital, Neillsville, September 24. He joins a brother, Jeffrey. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Richard Acker and Mr. and Mrs. Otto Kind, Jr., and great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Paul Acker and Mr. and Mrs. Otto Kind, Sr., all of Greenwood.

Barr, Charles I. (25 November 1906 – 7 March 1986)

Mr. Charles I. Barr, 79, of 206 W. 12th St., Neillsville, passed away Friday, March 7, at the home of his daughter, in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota. His death followed a lingering illness.

Mr. Barr was born November 25, 1906, at Longwood, son of Anthony and Ethel (Carlton) Barr. Graduating from Greenwood High School in 1924, he then attended Coin Electrical Institute. Returning to Greenwood, he worked as an electrician. For 43 years he was employed by NSP, retiring in 1971.

On August 4, 1934, he married Mable Shupe, at Greenwood. She predeceased him on March 16, 1967. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Greenwood Masonic Lodge 249, Kiwanis, and he Neillsville Gun Club.

Surviving are three children, Mrs. Robert (Sandra) Stigen and Thomas E. Barr, both of Spring Lake Park, Minnesota, and Mrs. Marvin (Carol) Pischer, Boseman, Montana; four sisters, Elsie Nyeland, Kansas City, Missouri, Hazel Braunies, Faribault, Minnesota, Viola Shaw, Milwaukee, and Jessie Stevenson, Eleva; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by his parents and wife.

No visitation is planned. The body has been cremated and ashes will be interred, at a later date, in Greenwood Cemetery. Rev. Howard Ott will conduct a memorial service Friday, March 14, 1 p.m., at Gesche Funeral Home. James Barr, Wilfred Galstad, and Viriginia Gassen will provide music. All memorials will go to the American Cancer Society.

Berger, Walter John (15 March 1898 – 2 March 1986)

Walter John Berger, 87, of Spokane, a partner in Berger-Mace Furniture at Lewiston for many years, died Sunday at a Spokane nursing home of causes related to age. Berger and his wife, Goldie, moved to Spokane in the mid-1970s. She survives at the family home. Berger opened Berger-Mace Furniture in partnership with Mark Mace in 1951. The business was sold in 1961.

Berger operated an automobile business at Pullman from 1924 to 1942 and owned furniture stores at Moscow and Pullman from 1942 to 1948. He was a life member of the Lewiston Elks Lodge and a member of the Lewiston Rotary, Lewiston Chamber of Commerce, the Lewiston and Clarkston golf and country clubs and the Organ Society.

He was born March 15, 1898, at Neillsville, to William and Augusta (Krueger) Berger. He attended school in Wisconsin and then worked in Montana for a time. He took automotive courses at Detroit, Michigan, and courses in mechanics and salesmanship at Los Angeles, California, before moving to Lewiston. He married Goldie Ralstin, October 28, 1920, at Lewiston.

Survivors in addition to his widow are a son, Stanley Berger of Spokane; a sister, Martha Berger of Watertown; and a brother, Arthur Berger of Neillsville. Another sister and two brothers preceded him in death.

Memorial service was held at Malcom’s Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel at Lewiston with the Rev. Richard L. Halstead, pastor of the Nez Perce Christian Church, officiating. Burial was at the Nez Perce Cemetery.

Carlson, Clare A. (3 April 1917 – 26 February 1986) With Flag

Former Neillsville resident Clare A. Carlson, 68, died February 26, at Highland Medical Center, Sebring, Florida. Mr. Carlson had resided in Sebring since his retirement in 1979.

Rev. James McBride conducted services held March 4, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Burial was made in the church cemetery.

Born at Almora, Minnesota, on April 3, 1917, he was one of the four children of John and Mina (Olson) Carlson. As a child, he moved with his family to Fergus Falls, where he attended school. At Sisseton, North Dakota, on July 21, 1935, he married Hazel Homes. An employee of the Fairway Grocery Store there, he entered the United States Army and served in Italy during World War II.

Upon his discharge, the couple moved to Racine, where he worked for the Co-op Grocery. Later, he owned grocery stores at Waupaca, Neillsville and Tomah, finally settling in Webster, South Dakota. He was a member of the Masons, Shriners, Elks, and the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Harold (JoAnn) Klein, Aberdeen, South Deakota, and Mrs. Bruce (Kathie) Flagstad of Sturgis, South Dakota; two sons, Larry of Wessington, South Dakota, and Richard of Saugus, California; a sister, Mrs. Mrs. Eleanor Orstad, Fergus Falls; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Christie, Helen (12 Jan 1903 - 1 March 1986)

Mrs. Helen L. (Wilcox) Christie, 83, former Greenwood resident, died Saturday, March 1, at Puyallup, Washington. Services were held March 6, at the Greenwood Grace United Methodist Church. The Rev. Norbert Miller officiated, and burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandsons.

Helen Wilcox was born at Woodstock, Illinois to Bert and Hester Wilcox. The family moved to Greenwood where she was married to Floyd Christie in 1920. They lived in the Greenwood and Loyal area before moving to Puyallup, Washington in 1973, where she has resided ever since.

Surviving are two sons, Floyd of Oregon City, Oregon; and Perry of Anchorage, Alaska; three daughters, Avis St. Martin of Puyallup; Fern Simonson of Eleva; and Eleanor Amundson of Springfield, Oregon; two brothers James and Homer Wilcox, both of New York; a sister, Pearl Chadwick, of New York; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Fitzmaurice, Philip J. “Rusty” (28 July 1926 – 28 February 1986)

Rural Humbird resident Philip “Rusty” Fitzmaurice passed away at his home on Friday evening, February 28. He was fifty-nine years old.

Born July 28, 1926, at Menomonie, he was the son of John D. and Anna (Steies) Fitzmaurice. Educated in the Humbird area, for several years he worked at farming near Janesville. Later, as a mechanic, he was employed at Janesville and various locations throughout central Wisconsin. On May 15, 1948, he married Edith J. Vinney, at Fairview. She survives him.

Also surviving ae eight children, Philip J. of Janesville, Mrs. Robert (Vicki) Dobson, Broadhead, Gary L. of Neillsville, Mrs. Thomas (Kathy) Hoge, Denver, Colorado, Staff Sgt/ Daniel D. of Marquette, Michigan, Timothy J., Mrs. Randy (Julie) Johnson, and Mrs. Bruce (Mary) Rochester, all of Humbird; three brothers, David of Avalon, Jake of Neillsville and James of Humbird; and nineteen grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Thomas and Gerald.

Reverend Howard Ott officiated during rites held Tuesday, March 4, at Gesche Funeral Home. Iris Musil and Mary Ann Johnson provided music. Interment was at the Town of Mentor Cemetery. The Melcher-Matti American Legion Post 320 conducted graveside military rites. Pallbearers were Robert Nandory, Daryl Hardwick, Ray Gagnon, Rick, Jeff, and Tom Fitzmaurice.

Kalsow, Roland R. (12 November 1907 – 4 March 1986)

Seventy-eight year old Neillsville resident, Roland F. Kalsow, died Tuesday, March 4, at Neillsville Memorial Hospital. Mr. Kalsow, who lived at 404 Fores St., passed away following a brief illness.

Mr. Kalsow was born November 12, 1907, at Town of Weston, the son of Lebrecht and Ida (Mallig) Kalsow. After his education, he farmed with his parents for several years. Later, he farmed alone in the Town of Weston until his marriage to Lillian C. Scheel on Octoberf 12, 1932, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, at Globe.

The couple continued to farm until 1950, when they retired and moved to Neillsville. He held various jobs until 1965, when he retired from a position as salesman for Winona Monument Company.

Surviving besides his wife are three children, Helene and Petra Kalsow, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Mrs. James (Pearl) Tank, of Brillion; and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Wilbert.

Rev. Richard Weber officiated at funeral services, Friday, March 7, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Music was provided by Sharon Nemitz. Interment was in Neillsville City Cemetery. Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Jerold Scheel, Harvey Pischer, Bob Bell, Melvin Hoffmann, Frederick Grap, Jr., and Donald Kalsow.

Krause, Felix (23 August 1904 – 23 February 1986)

Eight-one year rural Granton resident Felix Krause died Sunday, February 23, at the Marshfield Living Center. Rev. Maynard Stokka, of American Lutheran Church, Town of Grant, conducted services Wednesday, February 26, at Gilbertson Funeral Home, Granton. Burial was at Windfall Cemetery. Donna Chase and Jeanette Steiner provided music.

Mr. Krause was born August 23, 1904, at the Town of Grant, the son of John and Hulda Krause. On June 8, 1940, he wed Lois Lowery, at Christie. They lived for a time at the Town of Grant, but later moved to various places, residing the last seventeen years at Route 2, Granton.

Surviving besides his wife are four daughters, Jackie Tremmel of Milwaukee, Mrs. Jerry (Judy) Stephens, Stratford, Mrs. William (Peggy) Zarnke and Karlyn Krause, both of Montevideo, Minnesota; three sons, Michael of Green Bay, Jimmy of Loyal, and Tim of Marshfield; nineteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by a brother and three sisters.

Lepori, Steven M. (1898 - 27 February 1986)

Fr. Joseph Henseler conducted services March 3, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, for Stephen M. Lapori, of 104 E. Mill St., Spencer. The former Rt. 1 Granton resident died following a brief illness on February 27, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.

St. Mary’s Choir and Virginia Gassen provided music for the services. Gesche Funeral Home handled arrangements. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Steve Lepori, Jr., Patrick Rupinski, Steve Pilsner, Harold Lemke, James Hannan, and Paul Schmidt.

Mr. Lepori was born in Sala, Switzerland, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Lepori. He entered the United States in 1915 and lived in the Argyle area for five years, before moving to the Town of York to farm. On April 23, 1945, he married Eileen H. Hoeft, at Neillsville. The couple continued to farm for fifty years, in the Town of York, until retiring in 1965. They moved to Spencer in December of 1985.

Surviving besides his wife are three children, Steve, Jr., of Spencer, Mrs. Patrick (Mary) Rupinski, Birmingham, Alabama, and Mrs. Steve (Patty) Pilsner, Madison; a sister in Switzerland; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Prochnow, Cecilia B. (28 June 1915 – 8 March 1986)

Seventy-year old Milwaukee resident Cecilia Prochnow died Saturday morning, Mrch 8, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. She had been receiving treatment there in order to be nearer her children, Neillsville residents, Richard Prochnow and Babara Kubatzki.

Mrs. Prochnow was born June 28, 1915, in Illinois, daughter of Michael and Barbara (Mandrake) Galinsky. She was married to Charles R. Prochnow, and he predeceased her on July 8, 1985.

Surviving besides her two children are three brothers and a sister, all of Milwaukee, Mrs. Robert (Frances) Gauger, Tom, Robert and Raymond Galinsky; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, two brothers and a granddaughter.

Gesche Funeral Home handled arrangements. Visitation was at Schramka Funeral Home, Milwaukee, on Tuesday evening. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 12 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Milwaukee. Fr. Joseph Henseler will conduct graveside services, Thursday, March 13, 11 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Neillsville.

Smith, Evelyn M. (17 August 1907 - 26 February 1986)

Mrs. Albert L. “Pete” (Evelyn M.) Smith, 78, of 115 E. Second St. passed away suddenly Wednesday afternoon, February 26.

The former Evelyn Stolts was born August 17, 1907, at Sechlerville, to Charles and Nellie (Mortiboy) Stolts. After attending school at Hixton, she graduate from Winona High School in 1926. She worked in Winona and Chicago before her marriage to Albert Smith, on February 26, 1934, at Galesville.

Residing at Fountain City for two years, the couple then moved to Neillsville in 1936. Mrs. Smith was a member of the United Methodist Women.

Surviving are her husband, Albert; a daughter, Mrs. Walter (Loraine) Seaman, Greenville, South Carolina; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Douglas.

Funeral rites were conducted Saturday, March 1, at United Methodist Church, with Rev. Howard Ott officiating; Corrine Armitage and Cheri Diers provided music. Interment was at the Sechlerville Cemetery, Hixton. Serving as the pallbearers were Jack Kluckhohn, Marion Spencer, Jarry Smith, Donald Schwantes, Walter Oldham and Walter Ollech. Funeral arrangements were in charge of Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville.
