School: Colby H.S. – 3 Boys Receive Top FFA Degree (1970)

Three Colby boys received Wisconsin Farmer Degrees, the top award presented by
the Wisconsin Association of the Future Farmers of America.
The three boys are John Beyerl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Beyerl of route 1,
Colby, Leon Dommer, son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Dommer of route 1, Spencer, and
Jerry Martin (Marten?), also route 1, Spencer.
The degree is bestowed annually on two percent of the state membership.
The presentation was made at the state convention at Green Lake this week. The
convention was Monday to Wednesday, with the degrees conferred the last day.
Colby chapter delegates were Dennis Engel, chapter secretary, and Dave Rau,
reporter.
Accompanying the five boys were Don Steffen and Sam Nelson, agriculture
instructors.
John Beyerl was the chapter president the past year, with his program consisting
of dairy and agri-business experience. He plans to attend Wisconsin State
University at River Falls this fall.
Leon has been a chapter officer for two years, reporter last year and treasurer
this year. He has had a top rated dairy program throughout his four years of
high school. Leo plans to attend a farm short course at Madison this winter.
Jerry served the past year as the Colby chapter vice president. His farming
program was also concerned with dairy cattle. He plans to attend Wisconsin State
University at Oshkosh in September.
