Afkend, Clayton (30 JAN 1908 – 25 FEB 1970)

Clayton Afkend, 62, of Abbotsford (Clark Co., Wis.), died Wednesday February 25, 1970 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield, at 2 o'clock. He suffered an apparent heart attack at his home and was taken there by ambulance about noon.

The body lay in state at the Polnaszek Funeral Home, Abbotsford, and on Saturday service were held at Christ Lutheran Church, Abbotsford, at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. F.H. Sprengler. Ronald Boss was organist and Miss Julene Radlinger was the soloist.

Military rites were conducted at the Abbotsford Cemetery by the American Legion and VFW posts of Abbotsford, of which Mr. Afkend was a member. The firing squad was provided by the Wisconsin National Guard and Geoffrey Kieser was the bugler.

The pallbearers were Melvin Atzen, Robert Bogaard, Howard Kramer, and Roland Roth of Abbotsford, Bill Rellis of Loyal, and Lamarr Schmitz of Neillsville.

Clayton Afkend was born January 20, 1908 at Adrian, Minnesota, and came at an early age with his parents to Wisconsin. He attended Greenwood schools and was employed at the Greenwood General Store, and later at the former Adler Bakery in Marshfield.

He served in the Army in the European Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star. On October 1, 1947 his marriage to Hazel Dankemyer took place at Dubuque, Iowa. The couple came to Abbotsford in 1949 and operated an IGA grocery store on Highway 13, which he sold in 1960 to Howard Kramer.

In semi-retirement he operated a laundromat at Thorp for about a year, and also engaged in the real estate business.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Abbotsford, a past president of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, served as a supervisor for Clark County, and was a member of the Abbotsford Sportsmen's Club.

He is survived by one sister, Miss Melva Afkend, Greenwood, and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Lester Johnson of Marshfield.

He was preceded in death by Mrs. Afkend on April 15, 1968, and one brother.

Relatives and friends from away who attended the funeral were from Greenwood, Loyal, Neillsville, Madison and Sun Prairie.
