Proposed school referendums to increase the annual operating budget and to finance bleachers and lights at the high school track were the subject of an informational meeting in Abbotsford this week.

Abby School Superintendent Marcia Hochhalter spoke to staff members January 29, in the first of many informational meeting panned on the board proposal. A session for the general public is planned as part of a special board meeting on Monday, March 3, in the high school cafeteria.

The school board is asking district residents to allow an increase of $150,000 in the district’s revenue cap for five years. That hike in revenue would be supplied by a tax levy increase.

The second referendum asks voters for authorization for a single $195,000 loan to install bleachers and lights at the high school track. The funds would be borrowed from a local bank on a promissory note, and would become part of the district’s existing debt, due to be refinanced in 1988.

Hochhalter explained that it would not affect the existing $207,000 annual debt payment, but would simply extend the term of that debt, and this would not increase the local levy.

The $159,000 increase in revenues would increase the mill rate slightly, following a drastic drop from $15.79 per thousand in 1995-96 to $10.34 this year.
