Sachs, Walter C. (27 JUL 1897 – 2 JUN 1972)

The second fatality in just over six months was recorded at the Broadway Crossing in the City of Stanley, Friday, June 2, 1972, when Walter C. Sachs, 74, and formerly of Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), was struck and killed by a Soo Line freight train at about 9:50 a.m.

According to witnesses, Sachs was walking south and is belived to have seen the train coming. Apparently he misjudged the distance and was struck and died instantly of severe head injuries.

He was thrown about 100 feet from the point of impact, but was not run over by the train, which was going east at about 38-40 miles an hour.

Last November, at the same crossing, Louis Jandrt died from injuries received when his car was struck by a train.

Walter Sachs was born July 27, 1897 in the Town of Reseburg, Clark County, Wisconsin, and had spent most of his life in the Thorp area. At the time of his death he was retired and living at Stanley.

Funeral services were conducted from the Thorp Funeral Home, Monday, June 5, 1972 at 2 p.m., with Rev. R.W. Olson in charge. Burial was made in the Sylvan Cemetery, Town of Reseburg.

Pallbearers were Stanley Arciszewski, Lester Butterfield, Harold Hallanger, Raymond Stroming, Stanley Lendosky and Robert Zukowski.

He is survived by two brothers, Otto Sachs, Greenwood, and Elmer Sachs Owen; and five sisters, Mrs. Mary Tisdale, Greenwood; Mrs. Sidney (Amelia) Russell, Mrs. Bertha Russell and Mrs. Martha Harper, all of Eau Claire, and Mrs. Minnie Beranek, Chippewa Falls.
