John D. Wuethrich and Howard Sturtz I were honored and received awards recognizing their years f service and leadership in Clark County by the American Cancer Soiety at the meeting of the board of directors of the Clark County Unit on January 12, 1976.

Mr. Wuethrich is retiring from his position of Crusade Chairman and Mr. Sturtz is retiring from the board, but will continue to assist the special gifts program of the Crusade. Mr. Sturtz is also a past president of the Unit.

Daniel, Charles (22 Sep 1891 – 16 Jan 1976)

Services were held on Sunday, January 18 at the Thorp Funeral Chapel for Charles Daniel, 84, with Rev. R.W. Olson officiating.

He had been a resident of the Thorp Care Center for some time. He was in fairly good health until a few months ago, when he became ill and was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield. After a few weeks he was returned to the Care Center. He died at Victory Memorial Hospital at Stanley on Friday, January 16.

He is survived by one brother, Reinhold and family.

Pallbearers were Rodney Grimes, Donald Nye, Melvin Nye, Reuben Rossman and Fred Hedler. Burial was made in the Sylvan Cemetery in Reseburg Township.

News: Greenwood – New Ambulance (Jan 1976)

The Greenwood Area Ambulance Service has received $7,500 from the state safety coordinator’s office for a new ambulance.

The new ambulance will serve Greenwood, Hendren, Eaton, Mead and Warner. It was the sixth ambulance unit funded by Clark County through highway safety programs since 1970.

News: Thorp – Rec Center to Move to New Location (Jan 1976)

The Thorp Rec Center will move this weekend, January 31, 1976. The last day of operation in the present location, the former Pabich Food Mart building, will be Friday, January 30, it was announced by the Thorp Volunteer Firemen, who have run this program.

Getting the new location, Thorp Bakery Building, will take some time. The center will be closed until Wednesday, February, 11, 1976 when it will be back in operation, if some unforeseen circumstances don’t come up. The firemen will report the situation in next week’s Thorp Courier.

News: Thorp – Area Students Admitted to UW-Platteville (Jan 1976)

Mark Osowski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Osowski, Route 1, Thorp, and Erik Salander, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Salander, 209 Elm Street, Thorp, are among those who have been admitted to the University of Wisconsin, Platteville.

Present, Salander plans to major in Biology and Osowski plans to major in Mechanical Engineering.

Ignasiak, Jennie (1905 – 28 Jan 1976)

Mrs. Jennie Ignasiak, 70, former Junction resident, town of Thor, passed away at McNeal Memorial Hospital, Berwyn, Illinois, Tuesday morning.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 31, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Czestochowa, Junction Church, with Father Bill Buchman officiating. Burial will be made in the parish cemetery.

Rosary at 3 p.m. Friday by the Rosary Society, with a Parish Vigil being held at 8:30 p.m. Friday evening. The body will lie in state at the Plombon Funeral Home, Stanley, from 2 p.m. Friday til the time of service on Saturday.

Piper, Lucile (2 Sep 1895 – 7 Jan 1976)

Lucile Piper, 80, passed away of a long illness on January 7, 1976 at Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Lucile Burke was born September 2, 1895 at Thorp, Wisconsin. She graduated from Milwaukee County School of Nursing in 1924, practiced nursing in St. Louis, Missouri, Supervisor of Nurses, Milwaukee County Hospital in 1929, also nursed at Milwaukee Emergency Hospital. She moved back to Thorp in 1962.

On April 3, 1942 she was united in marriage at Milwaukee to Robert Piper, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. W.F. Nolechek of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Mrs. E. J. Nolan and Mrs. Roy Piper, both of Thorp, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, January 10, 1976, with burial in the East Thorp Cemetery.

Malinowski, Bruno (21 Jun 1912 – 16 Jan 1976)

Bruno Malinowski, 63, died at his home unexpectedly on Friday, January 16, 1976. Mr. Malinowski, a retired farmer, was born June 21, 1912 in Buffalo, New York. He lived in the Thorp area for the past 60 years.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Eleanor Sarafin and Mrs. Wm. Zawacki, both of Thorp. He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Funeral service was held at St. Stanislaus Church, Lublin, on Tuesday, January 20th, 10:00 a.m., with Father John Puerner officiating. Burial was made in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ted Zawacki, Frank Sarafin, Harold Sarafin, Ed Sarafin, Joe Sarafin and John Sarafin.

Out of town relatives came from Chicago, Darien, Burbank, Illinois, Madison, Lodi, Milwaukee, Mauston and Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
