Schmitt, Walter "Wally" F. (31 MAY 1928 - 2 SEP 2014)

Walter "Wally" F. Schmitt, 86, Edgar, died Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Golden Living Center-Continental Manor in Abbotsford, following complications from Parkinson's Disease.

He was born May 31, 1928 in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, son of the late Joseph and Christina (Kunt) Schmitt. On June 11, 1951, he married Rosemary M. Anderson in Cresco, Iowa. She survives.

For 10 years, Walter farmed in Iowa until moving to the town of Wien in 1961. He was both a dairy farmer and ginseng farmer in the town of Wien for many years. Walter enjoyed working with his backhoe, socializing and working with others and also liked to hunt and fish. He was an avid snowmobiler and was a Trail Boss and member of the Krecji City Cruisers Snowmobile Club.

Survivors include, his wife, Rosemary Schmitt, Edgar; three children, Daryl (Viann Teresinski) Schmitt, Marathon, Diane (Gary) Kaiser, Edgar and Roxane (Dan) Kurtzweil, Stratford; seven grandchildren, Chad (Kelly) Kurtzweil, Heather (Mike) Ellis, Greg Schmitt, Amy Kurtzweil, Robert (Tiffany) Kaiser, Lisa Schmitt and Amanda (Brian) Goosen; six great-grandchildren, Caleb and Casey O'Reilly, Emma and Chloey Kurtzweil and Grayson and Paige Kaiser; nine siblings, Marylen Trappe, Iowa, Joseph (Kay) Schmitt, Florida, Delores (Norbert) Shinley, Iowa, Joyce (Walt) Mrachek, Iowa, Robert (Wendy) Schmitt, Iowa, Arlo (Mary) Schmitt, Minnesota, George (Darlene) Schmitt, Iowa, Lester (Camella) Schmitt, Iowa and Raymond (Delores) Schmitt, Iowa.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Edmund and Jerry.

The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, September 8, 2014 at St. John Catholic Church, Edgar. Rev. Robert Streveler will preside. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Edgar. Friends may call on Sunday from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, Edgar and again on Monday from 10:30 a.m. until time of services at the church. There will be a rosary service at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Walter's name to be directed to the Parkinson's foundation.
