B. Singleton Dies; Rites Held Saturday

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Hemer funeral home, Medford, for Basil O. Singleton, 67, who died New Year’s Day after suffering an apparent heart attack at his home in the town of Maplehurst.

Mr. Singleton, who was declared dead on arrival at Memorial hospital shortly after noon, had been in ill health for some time.

Rev. Warren Behling, St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Medford, officiated at services and burial with full military rites took place in Perkinstown Community cemetery. The body lay in state at the funeral home Friday afternoon and evening.

Serving as pallbearers were Ernest Westrich, Edwin Petz, Lowell Clarke, Henry Mayer, Kenneth Emmerich and Ed Smith.

Basil Orlando Singleton was born January 3, 1907, in Hanover county, Michigan. His marriage to the former Katherine Olson, who survives, took place at Medford May 1, 1948. The couple lived at Eli, Minn., for 16years and moved to Taylor county in 1968.

He served in the Army during World War II, spending several years in the southwest Pacific theater of operations.

He was a woodsman and farmer and also was engaged in the blacksmith trade. Ill health force his retirement six years ago. He was a member of Klossner-Dietzler Veterans of Foreign Wars post, Medford.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Singleton is survived by a daughter, Sharon Singleton, Owen; one grandchild; three sisters, Bessie Westrich and Mrs. Daisy Moyer of Medford and Ruth, Mrs. Clarence Thompson, Stetsonville, and a brother, Richard, Isabelle, Minn.

He was preceded in death by two children, a sister and six brothers.
