East Weston (Panther Creek) (24 Apr 1919)

Well, talk about bad roads. We ain’t gifted with gab to describe them. It puts our mind back to some years ago when Bob French used to go with a horse and road cart out into the country to see the tootsie wootsies. Bob usually put a feed of oats back of the seat for the horse’s dinner, and the roads were so full of sink holes, stumps and roots that Bob had to drive so crooked that sometimes the horse was eating oats from under the back of the seat, and a good many who drove team over some of the roads those days and the roads as they are this spring will mighty near believe it, even if the writer and Bob do tell it. Wm. Turville is the best prepared for a joy ride over these roads of anyone around here. He has a buggy he can get into and turn around on the run 17 times on a hill of potatoes, while some might have three or four wagons and as many hay racks to move in order to make room.

Louis Kaudy, one of the returned soldier boys, has turned in already to help out the farmers and has gone to work for Fred Wendt, two good boys together,

The sugar party at Will Hurlburt’s one evening last week was well attended and all report an enjoyable time and a fill up on the good old sweet stuff.

Cy. Snyder is off on a furlough. He is now amongst the town of York, ma’ams, but we don’t fear for his safety as he has some of his brother Dave’s qualities as a runner.

Oh, no, Polly, we don’t write any more poetry on cats since we got into such a mix-up with the Times editor and he stood us on our head in the gutter in the presence of a lot of our best girls, and now whenever we meet Leona Dresden, Emma Gluck or Lillie Holtz, and a lot more of the pretty girls in Neillsville, they can’t help but shed tears to think of it, but, however, Polly, the cat is the most affectionate friend we have in the animal kingdom, and I would be more afraid of a person who would abuse a cat than I would of an old maid, believe me.
