Johnson, Douglas J. “Jim” Jr. (10 APR 1952 - 30 JUL 2016)

Douglas J. “Jim” Johnson, Jr., 62, of Hamilton, Montana, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2016 at St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula.

He was born April 10, 1952 in Beloit. Jim lived in several places including Beloit, Janesville, and Greenwood before his family finally settled in Sparta.

As a child, Jim suffered from polio and although it affected his mobility, he was frequently found playing football, camping, hunting, and fishing with his family. He also loved to swim, an activity he excelled at.

Jim graduated from Sparta Senior High School with the class of 1972. During his youth, Jim worked for the family business, Johnson Office Equipment, cleaning and servicing office machines. After high school, Jim continued to work at the family business and also worked for Bruce Smith in Tomah working on office equipment. Jim attended college courses in Whitewater and Platteville, and worked a variety of jobs during his life. One of his favorite jobs was working as a disc jockey at the local radio station.

Jim moved to the Bitterroot Valley of Montana in the early 1980’s, and although he left to find employment in other states, he always returned to the Bitterroot. Later in his life, Jim loved to frequent the local thrift stores and was always on the hunt for a bargain. He loved his young nieces and nephews and liked to share holidays with his family, a time when he would tease everyone unmercifully. He followed in his father’s footsteps and collected antique clocks, while his artistic abilities lent themselves to miniature ship building, and shadowbox and framing projects.

Jim is survived by his brothers, Calvin and wife Marcella of Mankato, Minnesota, Perry and wife Betty of Hamilton, Montana, Mike and wife Karen of Medford, and his sister, Diane and husband Alton Cottrell of Hamilton, Montana. Jim is further survived by various aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his life-long friend and the love of his life, Vickie Uting Seifert of St. Louis Park, Minnesota and Black River Falls.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Douglas J. Johnson, Sr. and Gwendolyn S. (Taggart) Johnson, and his niece, Hannah Johnson Capen.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 5, 2016 at 10:30 AM at the Daly Leach Chapel in Hamilton, Montana, with Pastor John Capen officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service. Interment will take place following the reception, at the Victor Cemetery.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the charity of your choice. Condolences may be left for the family at www.dalyleachchapel.com.
