Carl, Herman (25 NOV 1864 – 13 Feb 1919)

Herman Carl, a resident of this community since 1887, died at the Sacred Heart Hospital at Eau Claire on Thursday morning. He had been ailing for several weeks and went to the hospital about two weeks ago, where two operations were performed, but without the desired result.

Deceased was a resident of Pommern, Germany, and was born Nov. 25, 1864. He was educated in the public schools and like his father and grandfather, took up the trade of a carpenter. In Sept. 1883 he came to the United States, locating in Chicago and following his trade there until July, 1887, when he moved to Clark County. He located at Granton, doing carpenter work in the summer and working in the woods in the winter until 1890 when he bought a 40-acre farm which became the nucleus of the fine Carl farm which is located northwest of this city near the Mounds.

On April 16, 1886, Mr. Carl was united in marriage to Martha Elizabeth Martin and to them eight children were born, all of whom remain to comfort their mother in her bereavement. The children are Gustaf, Alfred, Ervin, William, Harry, Ernest, and Elizabeth. Ervin, Alvin and Gustaf are members of the Untied States Army and are still with the colors.

Mr. Carl was a whole-souled, genial gentleman, upright and honorable and as a result highly esteemed in this community in which he gained a competence by hard work and careful management. He was a true friend and was kindly and charitable in all his daily acts. He enjoyed and took great interest in public affairs and was highly progressive in his ideas. He was school clerk of his district for seven years and also served the town of Pine Valley as treasurer. He was a stockholder of the Farmers Elevator Co., the Canning Co., the First National Bank and the Wausau Packing Co. and in addition did considerable work for the Lynn Insurance Co. He was a progressive citizen whose death is sincerely regretted, especially owing to the fact that he had but lately moved to this city and bought a home in which to continue the active life which he had always led.

Mr. Carl was laid to rest on Monday afternoon, services being conducted by Rev. Brandt at St. John’s Lutheran Church of which the deceased was a member. Interment was made in the Neillsville Cemetery.
