Bennett, Florence (10 February 1898 – 2 March 1985)

Graveside services were to be held on Wednesday morning, March 6, for Florence Bennett, 87. The Rev. Mark Voll of the Neillsville United Church of Christ was to officiate at the Neillsville City Cemetery. The Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bennet died on Saturday evening, March 2, in Neillsville Memorial Hospital. She had been a resident of Neillsville Memorial Home for the past several months.

The deceased was born on February 10, 1898, in Neillsville to William and Anna (Griesch) Leason. She received her early education in local schools and graduated from Neillsville High School. She then attended Milwaukee Downer College for her teaching degree, which was followed by teaching for a few years.

On July 16, 1921, she married Dr. Marcus Bennett in Marshfield ceremonies. The veterinarian and wife made their first home in Black Earth and in 1922 moved to Mt. Horeb. In 1932, they moved to Neillsville. Mrs. Bennett was a member of the Eastern Star.

Surviving her is a son, Keith, of Lake Zurich, Illinois; and a grandson, Merk Bennett, Neillsville. She was preceded in death by her husband (July 9, 1978) and a brother, Jess.

Ford, Eleanor M. (14 December 1923 – 6 March 1985)

The Rev. Mark Voll officiated at Neillsville United Church of Christ funeral services for Eleanor M. Ford on Saturday afternoon, March 9. Mrs. Ford, 61, died in Neillsville Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, March 6. She had been in ill health for some time. She last made her home at Rt. 1 Humbird. The Gesche Funeral Home of Neillsville was in charge of arrangements, and burial was made in the Town of Pine Valley Cemetery. Music at the service was offered by Ellis Wall, Mark Voll and Eileen Zank.

The deceased was born on December 14, 1923, in Catawba to Harry and Christine (Johnson) Hansen. In 1929, she moved with her parents to Clark County and attended schools here, graduating from Neillsville High School. On August 30, 1942, she married Kenneth Seelow in Iowa ceremonies, and the couple took up farming near Neillsville. In 1957, they moved to Milwaukee. On February 6, 1979, Mr. Seelow died.

On December 22, 1979, the deceased married John E. Ford in Milwaukee ceremonies. A short time later they moved to rural Humbird. She was very active in the United Church of Christ and had been a Sunday School teacher for 23 years in Milwaukee.

Surviving her besides her second husband, is her mother, Mrs. Christine Hansen, Neillsville; three sons, Richard of Oak Creek, Eugene of Milwaukee and DeWayne of Neillsville; two stepchildren, Mrs. Roger (Patricia) Ramlow of Hubertus and John Richard of Milwaukee; and seven grandchildren. Joining them are three brothers, Melnard Hansen of Greenwood, Leland Hansen of Neillsville and Everett Hansen of Granton; and five sisters, Mrs. Pearl Prock and Mrs. Robert (Carol) Mortenson, both of Neillsville, Mrs. Belle Mazola and Mrs. Dewey (Evelyn) Walker, both of Fairchild and Mrs. Ray (Lila) Dobbs, Gardiner, Montana.

She was preceded in death by her father, first husband, brother Orbert and sisters, Genevieve and Sylvia.

Freedlund, Thomas C. (22 September 1964 – 23 February 1985)

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, February 26, for Thomas C. Freedlund, who died in Eau Claire on Saturday, February 23, after taking his own life. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sherwood served as the site for the funeral; the Rev. E. T. Keller officiated with the Gesche Funeral Home of Neillsville in charge of arrangements.

The deceased was born on September 22, 1964, in Rockford, Illinois, to Leonard and Ann (Larson) Freedlund. He attended school in Rockford and the last two years of high school at Pittsville, where he graduated in 1982. He then worked at various jobs and made his home at rural Pittsville. He was single.

Surviving him, besides his parents, is a brother, Loren, Rockford; two stepsisters, Mrs. Hugh (Linda) DeGroff and Mrs. James (Charlene) Holmberg, both of Rockford; and a stepbrother, Larry Freedlund, Bourbonnais, Illinois.

Hartung, Anthony L. (5 December 1907 – 21 February 1985)

A long-time Town of Pine Valley farmer, Anthony L. Hartung, 77, died in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, on Thursday morning, February 21. He last made his home at 133 East Fourth St., Neillsville.

The deceased was born on December 5, 1907, in the Town of Pine Valley to John and Margaret (Wiederhold) Hartung. He received his early education in the rural Hiawatha School and then at St. Mary’s Parochial School in Neillsville. He then farmed with his parents in the Town of Pine Valley; after his parents’ death he stayed on the farm until retiring in 1964. He then moved into Neillsville and worked at various jobs. He never married. He was a member of St. Mary’s congregation.

Surviving him are two sisters, Mrs. Anton (Rosaline) Bichler of Neillsville and Helena Hartung of Chicago; two brothers, Clarence of Carson City, Nevada, and Arthur of St. Louis, Missouri. He was preceded in death by six brothers, John, George, Joseph, Frank, Albert and Henry; and a sister Elizabeth.

Funeral services were held on Monday morning, February 25, from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville, with the Rev. Joseph Henseler officiating. Music was provided by St. Mary’s Choir, accompanied by Virginia Gassen. Burial was made in the parish cemetery; pallbearers were Laddie Matousek, Norman Lynch, Hilbert Naedler, Ernest Gaden, Ed Rychnovsky and George Pagenkopf. The Gesche Funeral Home of Neillsville was in charge of arrangements.

Horehled, A. Ernest (27 December 1915 – 2 March 1985)

A. Ernest Horehled, a longtime Town of Washburn farmer, died in Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, on Saturday morning, March 2. He had been in ill health for some time.

The deceased was born on December 27, 1915, in the Town of Washburn to Joseph and Louise (Spaete) Horehled. He was educated in the rural Carlyle School and then began farming with his father. On September 19, 1940, he married Vivian Beyer in Town of Pine Valley ceremonies. The couple continued to farm with his parents and when they died, they continued to operate the farm. In 1978, he retired and since that time have traveled extensively in the U.S. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church (ALC) in the Town of Pine Valley.

Private funeral services were held on Tuesday morning, March 5, at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville with the Rev. Maynard Stokka officiating. Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Organist was Virginia Karnitz; pallbearers were Richard McFarlane, Roger Krause, Theodore Linster, Melvin Mech, Allan Krause and Kip Schlinsog.

Surviving Horehled, besides his wife, are three daughters, Mrs. Roger (Carol) Krause of Markesan, Mrs. Richard (Helen) McFarlane of Gurnee, Illinois, and Mrs. Kip (Joan) Schlinsog of Granton; his stepmother Lena Horehled, Neillsville; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Erna.

Krumholz, Hibbard (9 June 1911 – 21 February 1985)

Hibbard Krumholz, 73, a former Humbird area farmer, died on February 21 in Black River Memorial Hospital.

The deceased was born on June 9, 1911, in Mondovi to Fredrick and Helen (Hollister) Krumholz. He grew up in the Mondovi, Cleghorn and Fairchild areas. On July 26, 1942, he married Leona Sleeter in Black River Falls ceremonies. The couple then farmed in the Humbird area until retiring in 1973 and moved into Humbird.

Surviving him, besides his wife, are two sons, Robert and Brian, both of Humbird; a daughter, Debra Jahn, Alma Center; a sister, Philora Rasmussen, Viola; a brother, Stanley, Eau Claire; and four grandsons. He was preceded in death by a sister, Norma.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 26, from St. John’s United Church of Christ in Humbird, with the Rev. Donald King officiating. Burial was in the Town of Mentor Cemetery. The Jensen Funeral Home of Hixton was in charge of arrangements.

Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Perkovich, formerly of the Granton area, were held from St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Chili on Saturday afternoon, February 23. The Gilbertson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Surviving Mrs. Louis (Anna) Perkovich is a son, George, of Pueblo, Colorado; two daughters, Mrs. Rose Clark of Clay Center, Kansas, and Mrs. Wanda Griffin of Far Oak, California; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Stockwell, Ella (3 October 1890 – 26 February 1985)

The Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville was the Friday morning, March 1, service site for Ella Stockwell, 94. She was a resident of Neillsville Memorial Home prior to her death, passed away on Tuesday morning, February 26. She last made her Neillsville home at 10 Clay Street.

The Rev. Mark Voll of the United Church of Christ officiated at the service with burial made in the Neillsville City Cemetery. The service music was offered by Eileen Zank and Wilfred Galstad, soloist. Pallbearers were Edward and Walter Zank, Robert Opelt, Mike Krultz, Norman Poppe and Arthur Drescher.

The deceased was born on October 3, 1890, in Milwaukee to Henry and Amelia (Immisch) Stelloh. As a young girl, she resettled with her family in the Town of Pine Valley. She received her education in the Silver Crest School and then worked in Neillsville for several Years. On April 11, 1916, she married Arthur Stockwell in Neillsville ceremonies. The couple began in farming on Mrs. Stockwell’s parents’ farm and resided there until 1958 when they moved into Neillsville.

Surviving her is a son, Archie, who made his home with her since 1976. She was preceded in death by her husband (January 6, 1971), five brothers and three sisters.

Ure. Lula (28 January 1901 – 22 February 1985)

Funeral services for Lula Ure, 84, of R. 1 Granton, who died in Neillsville Memorial Hospital on Friday afternoon, February 22, were held on Monday, February 25, at Christ Lutheran Church in Chili, with the Rev. E. T. Keller officiating, and burial made in the Town of Lynn cemetery. The Gilbertson Funeral Home of Granton was in charge of arrangements.

The deceased was born on January 28, 1901, in the Town of Lynn to William and Ella (Davidson) Sternitzky. She attended parochial school in Granton. On November 23, 1923, she married Robert Ure in Waukegan, Illinois, ceremonies. The couple then farmed in the Town of Lynn. She was a member of the Christ Lutheran Congregation.

Surviving her, besides her husband, are two sons, Lloyd of Granton and Ronald of Rockford, Illinois; and three daughters, Mrs. Urban (Lila) Schmidt of Neillsville, Muriel Ure of Granton and Mrs. Duane (Rita) Rollins of Chili. Joining them is a sister, Frieda Johnson, Chili; 16 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters and a grandson.

Winn, Ralph L. (21 August 1910 – 19 February 1985)

Granton native Ralph L. Winn, 74, of Galesville, died on February 18 in La Crosse Lutheran Hospital.

He was born on August 21, 1910, in Granton, to Clifford and Mae (Cubes) Winn. He married Esther D’Amato, and they were later divorced. He worked as a machinist for the Waukesha Foundry for many years. After his retirement, he moved to Galesville where he owned and operated Ralph’s Signs. On February 4 of this year, he married Carol Matheson.

Surviving him, besides his wife, are two sons, Ronald of Galesville and Clifford of Scottsdale, Arizona; four grandsons; three brothers, Ronald of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, Donald of Golden, Colorado, and Bernard of Bay City, Michigan; and his stepfather, Harry Hales, Neillsville.

Funeral services were held on February 23 from the Granton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. R. Steven Krueger officiating. Burial was made in the Windfall Cemetery. The Smith Funeral Home of Galesville was in charge of arrangements.
