School: Greenwood - FFA Members Get Farmer Degree (1958)

Three members of the Greenwood Chapter of Future Farmers of America will be among the 264 FFA members around the state who will be awarded State Farmer Degrees at the State FFA Convention to be held at Green Lake, Wisconsin on June 10, 11, 12 and 13. They are LaVerne Lindner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Casper Lindner, Loyal; Phillip Vollrath, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Vollrath Sr., Greenwood; and Norman Mayenschein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Curtiss Mayenschein, Thorp. Winning this degree represents the highest award in FFA work on the state level. Candidates are selected on the basis of their farming programs, scholarship, leadership and cooperative activities.

Phillip Vollrath served this past years as treasurer of the FFA. He has participated in state and local judging contests. His farming program consites of dairy cattle, purebred hog, grain improvement and dairy herd testing. This past year he has served as a member of the Junior Board of Directors of the Clark Electric Cooperative. Phillip also has received the DHIA award, which is given annually to the graduating agriculture student who excels in testing. This fall he will enroll at River Falls State College.

Dairy cattle, swine, corn test plots and dairy herd testing compose the farming program of LaVerne Lindner. He has represented the FFA in contest work and has been awarded the Farming Program Award, which is given to the Graduating Senior agriculture student who has the best developed farming program. After graduation he intends to farm.

Norman Mayenschein has served this past year as FFA secretary. His farming program consists of dairy cattle, hogs, sheep, dairy herd testing and corn yield plots. He has also been a member of the high school football and volleyball teams for the past four years.

Accompanying the boy to Green Lake will Louis Lesar, president elect of the local FFA, and their advisor, Victor Wagner.
