Columbia (18 April 1974)

The Norbert Endels report the return of the sandhill cranes to their fields and meadows. A small creek flowing through the farm is an attraction as they feed on frogs, small rodents and insects.

The young birds are brown and the adults are gray with uniform coloration. Adults have a bare red cap. Both young and adult are very large in size, reaching a length of 37 inches with a wingspread of 80 inches. Their voice is a loud, low, musical rattle. These birds are often seen in large flocks. The sandhill cranes have been returning to the Endel farm each spring, usually at this time.

A cardinal was seen in a small apple tree on the Sollberger lawn last week. Cardinals are not common in Columbia.

Mrs. Joe Jarems and son, James, of North Lake, Il., spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Bohnhoff. They returned home Sunday.

Debra Lee Gollubske of Marathon, granddaughter of the Bohnhoffs, spent the Easter weekend here and returned home Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Endel of Johnson Creek drove here Friday, bringing their daughters, Tammy and Kristi, to spend a week with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Endel.

Mr. and Mrs. George Church of Pine Valley visited the George Mashins Thursday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Mashin visited Mr. and Mrs. Al Wilson in Neillsville last week Sunday.

Mike Werderitch of West Allis spent the Easter holidays at his vacation home in Columbia.
