Nowobielski, Leon Peter (22 October 1921 - 24 July 2015)

Leon P. Nowobielski, age 93, of Thorp, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2015, at Sacred Heart hospital in Eau Claire. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 27, 2015, at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Thorp. Rev. Janusz Kowalski officiated and burial followed in Old St. Hedwig’s Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Daniel Nowobielski, Gregory Nowobielski, Kenneth Nowobielski, Kevin Nowobielski, and Kelly Nowobielski, and Dominic Paul. Visitation was held at the Thorp Funeral Home, in Thorp, on Sunday, July 26, 2015, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 rosary service, and again at the church, on Monday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.

Leon Peter Nowobielski was born on October 22, 1921, in the Town of Withee, rural Thorp, to Andrew and Catherine (Wnek) Nowobielski. He was raised on the family farm and received his education at the Pozen School. Leon was united in marriage to Genevieve Kopacz on November 24, 1945, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church. He farmed in the Town of Reseburg, rural Thorp, from 1946 to 1994. While farming, he also worked for Mattes Livestock for many years.

He was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church, where he had been a very active member, and a former member of the Thorp Sportsman’s Club. He served for 26 years as a board member and as chairman for the Town of Reseburg. Leon had many interests, but especially enjoyed listening and dancing to polka music.

He is survived by his dear special friend: Myrtle Kocherer of Thorp; two sons: Robert (Audrey) Nowobielski and James (Lore) Nowobielski, both of Thorp; 11 grandchildren: Angela Drost, Daniel (Amada) Nowobielski, Gregory Nowobielski, Karen (Wade) Kroeplin, Kenneth (Sarah) Nowobielski, Kevin Nowobielski, Kelly (Nichole) Nowobielski, Charlotte (Justin Endru, Isabelle Nowobielski, Ashley Gillett and Erika Gillett; 14 great-grandchildren : Reece, Calli, Braxtin, Emrik, Sylvia, Dominic, Bailey, Brianna, Molly Bridget, Levi, Amelia, Jadden and Brooklyn; two brothers: Henry (Colleen) Nowobielski and Clarence (Eloise) Nowobielski of Thorp; two sisters: Joan (Gerald) Rademaker of Thorp, Christine Niedzwiecki of Thorp; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Genevieve, on Octob4er 20, 1993; one brother, Joseph Nowobielski; two sisters: Frances Larkowski and Marie Baginski.
