York, Pfc. Charles H. (Service Notes - 1973)

Pfc. Charles H. York, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold L. York, Rt. 1 Neillsville, participated with 1,400 Ft. Bragg, N. C. soldiers in Exercise Deep Furrow, conducted in the southern region of allied command, Europe.

The nine-day exercise, an annual event, included forces from Greece, Turkey, United Kingdom and the U. S. Highlights of the exercise were a multinational amphibious landing and an airborne operation in the Turkish Thrace.

Landing forces held maneuvers in the Greek and Turkish Thrace while naval forces carried out amphibious and carrier operations in the eastern Mediterranean, including the Aegean sea.

The exercise was designed to test our NATO capabilities in defending Turkey from aggressors and securing the warm-water ports of the Black sea and the Sea of Marmara; as well as insuring the security of the Bosporus Straits.

Pfc. York is a clerk and driver in Headquarters company of the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg.
