Qualle, Newell (8 SEP 1894 – 20 JUL 1968)

Newell Qualle, 73, supervisor of Thorp Public School for 26 years prior to his retirement in 1954, died Saturday, July 20th, 1968 in Mesa, Arizona, where he and his wife were making their home.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 24th at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Stanley, and burial was made in the city cemetery at Bloomer. Members of Legion Post 118, Thorp, were pallbearers.

Mr. Qualle was born sept. 8, 1894, at Martell in Pierce County (Wis.). After attending rural school in Pierce County, and obtaining his high school education at Gale College in Galesville, Qualle attended Wis. State University, River Falls, where he qualified for a teaching license after two years.

He was united in marriage to Hazel Galloway on Aug. 18, 1921 at Bloomer.

Her served as a member of the radio signal corps in the U.S. Army during World War I. Following release from the Army he began teaching at Arkansaw (Wis.). After two years he attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, for one year, then taught at Ontario for one year. He returned to the university for two years and qualified for his bachelor of arts degree in 1925. Following a summer school session in 1937 he received a master's degree.

Before coming to Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) in the fall of 1929, he was supervising principal and instructor at Cadott. He taught physics, science and citizenship at Thorp until the growth of administrative responsibilities required him to abandon a teaching schedule.

Mr. Qualle was a member of the Thorp American Legion Post, which he had served as adjutant for 17 years. He was a representative of District 13 for Civil Defense, and had helped to organized the Cloverbelt Conference.

After retiring as supervising principal of Thorp schools, Mr. Qualle and his wife had operated a flower shop here for at time before moving to Arizona.

In addition to his wife, survivors are a son, Tom, of Phoenix, Arizona, and two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Iga Drolsom of Ellsworth, Wis.

Friends attending were from Ellsworth, Eau Claire, Madison, Watertown, Townson Lake, Bloomer, Chippewa Falls, Augusta, St. Paul, Minn., Stanley, Cadott, and Thorp.
