Schmidt, Robert L. "Bob" (14 FEB 1926 – 24 DEC 2014)

Robert L. "Bob" Schmidt, 88, Milton, formerly of Loyal, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014, at home after a long, courageous battle with cancer, with his family by his side. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Milton. Rev. Dave Timmerman officiated. Burial followed at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery with full military rites.

Robert Lawrence Schmidt was born on Feb. 14, 1926, in Loyal, where he lived on his family's farm. He enlisted in the United States Army, and served from December 1949 to January 1952 during the Korean War. After returning home, he continued to work on the family farm and later moved to Janesville, where he worked at General Motors for more than 30 years. He met his first wife, Jacqueline J. Phillips, and they were married on Aug. 10, 1957, in Eau Claire. They later moved to a 30-acre farm in Milton. They had four children -- Lawrence, Thomas, John and Laura. His wife passed away on April 16, 1977. He later married Winnie Griffith on May 18, 1996, and remained married until her death on April 19, 2009. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Milton and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards with his grandchildren, traveling, gardening, driving tractors, making sauerkraut, trips to casinos, spinning the wheel and the punch board. Bob will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.

Robert is survived by his children, John (Diane) Schmidt, Milton, Lawrence Schmidt, Bluffton, Ind., and Laura Schmidt, Union Grove; one sister, Sally Becker, Neillsville; one brother, George (MaryJane) Schmidt, Janesville; nine grandchildren, Amy (Ryan) Lovelace, Janesville, Michael (Valerie) Schmidt, Janesville, Chris Schmidt, Milton, Jennifer Schmidt, Janesville, Brian (Amy) Schmidt, Bluffton, Ind., Robbie and Adam Schmidt, Bluffton, Ind., Randi (Taylor) Roehl, Milton, and RaeAnn (Ryan) Peterson, Milton;, five great-grandchildren, Ava, Jase, Zoey, Bree and Logan; and three step-daughters, Carol Baldwin, Terri Lawrence and Cindy Griffith, all of Janesville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Christine Schmidt; six brothers, Joseph, Paul, Henry, Bernard, Anthony and Verland Schmidt; one sister, Florence Rueth; a son, Thomas Schmidt; his wives, Jacqueline Schmidt and Winnie Schmidt; and a granddaughter, Myah Schmidt.

Albrecht Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Milton, assisted the family with arrangements.
