Haas, Bernard J. (21 August 1897 - 23 May 1973)

Funeral services were held Saturday morning from St. Mary’s Catholic Church for Bernard J. Haas, 75, of Neillsville, who died May 23. The Rev. Charles D. Brady of St. Mary’s and the Rev. Peter Leketas of Marshfield officiated and burial was made in the parish cemetery. A Rosary service was held Friday evening at the Georgas Funeral Home, where the body of Mr. Haas was in state.

Bernard Haas, the son of Lawrence and Mary (Arnst) Haas, was born August 21, 1897, in Sheboygan. He received his education at St. Mary’s school, entered military service in October of 1918 at Neillsville, served as a private in Battery 9, 9 TM Battalion, and was discharged at Camp Dodge, Ia., on December 18, 1918. His marriage to the former Helene Marx took place May 26, 1923, at St. Mary’s in Neillsville.

Mr. Haas worked as a mechanic for the Ford garage for several years, and became a letter carrier for the postal department in 1929, retiring in 1959. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, and the Holy Name Society and of Haugen-Richmond American Legion Post No. 73.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three children: Joanne Haas, at home, Mrs. Charles (Marilyn) Meyer of Ashton, Ia., and James Haas of Barron; two brothers, Joe Haas of Neillsville and Martin Haas of San Diego, Ca; and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Cal Swenson, Joe Resong, Gene Ross, Louie Kessler, Leander Schuld and Joe Wavrunek. Hymns were “O God, Our help in Ages past,” “Crown Him with Many Crowns,” “Merciful Savior” and “O King of Mighty Splendor.” Mrs. Coletta Short was the organist.

Those from out of town who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Meyer, David and Vicki of Ashton, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. James Haas, Jeanne, Mary, Lori and Teresa of Barron, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Caton and Mrs. Cecelia Caton of Eau Claire and Mrs. Harvey Corner and Mrs. Mae Haas of Jefferson.
