Varney, Verne (Making Good – FEB 1922)

The following is taken from the Y's Record published at State College, Brookings, S.D. and tells how Verne Varney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Varney is getting along in his work.

"State College is indeed fortunate in securing a man of experience as YMCA worker among young men. Verne V. Varney came to State College last year from Stoughton, Wis. At the termination of his two years of successful work as community YMCA Secretary at that place.

Mr. Varney is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, receiving his B.S. degree in agriculture in 1918. In his senior year he was president of the student YMCA and the Student Senate.

After his graduation he served as 2nd Lieutenant M.P., 19th Division, until honorably discharged in the spring of 1919. On July 1, 1919 he assumed his responsibilities as YMCA Secretary at Stoughton, Wis. Here he proved his worth as a worker among men and soon endeared himself in the lives of the citizens of Stoughton, which made it difficult for them to accept Mr. Varney's resignation.

Mr. Varney is a very likeable fellow who mixes well with all the students, faculty and businessmen. As a member of the Rotary Club in Brookings he is able to keep the work of our local YMCA in touch with them. His Hi-Y Club is being fostered under his leadership.

As a worker among students he assumes his task with an unbending purpose to meet the needs of men and endeavoring to serve them to the end. If you don't know Verne, get acquainted with him. It's a treat. He isn't a Sweede, even though he looks like one."
