Arends, Gladys #2 (15 APR 1883 - 14 MAY 1939)

Funeral services for Mrs. John Arends were conducted at the M.E. Church, Thursday afternoon, May 18, 1939 at 2 o’clock, Rev. C.R. Gaylord officiated. The choir composed of Mr. and Mrs. James Slauson, Mmes. Geo. Haeuser, Irving Sherman, Chal Perkins and Harold Stabnow, sang “The Old rugged Cross” accompanied by Miss Mabel Bishop at the piano. Mrs. Louis Behrens and Mrs. Albert Dahl sang “In The Garden” accompanied by Miss Bishop at the piano. She was laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Arends, nee Gladys Cummings was a resident of this city nearly all of her life. She attended school and graduated from high school with the class of 1902. She then attended Oshkosh Normal and taught school for 8 years prior to her marriage. She was a charter member of the Greenwood Woman Club and for many years a member of the Library Board. She was also a member of the Methodist Church, Ladies Aid and taught a Sunday school class for many years.

She is survived by her husband and daughter, Theresa, two brothers, Eugene Cummings, Lindsey, Mont.; Charles Cummings, Tomahawk; and two sisters, Mrs. O.C. Behrens and Miss Rue Cummings, both of Greenwood.

The honorary pallbearers were Ed Buker, Albert Shanks, Harold Stabnow, Herbert Schwarze, Dr. Loren Giswold and W.F. Nuenfeldt.

The pallbearers were Louis Stoneberg, Arley Syth, Art Syth, Earl Sloniker, Harry Stafford and Ray Kauffman of Loyal. The active pallbearers were boys who went to school to her when she was teaching.

The flower girls were Misses Joyce Gaylord, Lorina Humke, Ruth Turnquist, Frances Scholler and Mmes. Art Christie and Julian Horgan.

Meyer, Colby; Mr. and Mrs. Jake Hafemeier, Mrs. Mike Hafemeier, Stetsonville; Mr. and Mrs. Carrol Behrens, Mrs. Otto Anderson, Mrs. Morris Anderson, Stevens Point; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gries, Colby; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Garvin, Sparta; Harold Blaasch, Rib Lake; Mrs. F.A. Boeckman and daughter Kathryn, Marshfield; Mrs. Odin Wang and daughter, Mrs. Otto Hiles, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Fradette, Mr. and Mrs. A. Devos, Neillsville; Mrs. Art Long, Stanley.
