LINGERING ILLNESS FATAL TO DONALD VENET 52

A former Withee resident, Donald Venet, 52, and more recently of Waukegan, Ill., succumbed to a lingering illness at Downey Veterans’ Hospital Monday, November 23rd. Graveside services were held here on Saturday, November 28, at Riverside Cemetery with Rev. Byrle Knudsen, Pastor of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Withee, officiating.

Serving as pallbearers were Toivo Kangas, Benhart Hill, Eugene Santala, Rueben Hill, Hjalmer Kangas and Ray Nevela.

Born May 31, 1912, at Wakefield, Mich., he spent his early life here until he became 21 years of age when he went to Alaska and worked as a longshoreman. While in Alaska he entered the Army during World War II seeing extensive overseas action during which time he was awarded two battle stars, two bronze stars, four overseas stripes, and the Good Conduct Medal while serving with the 5th Infantry in the Middle East Theatre of operations. Upon his discharge he returned to Alaska for a short time, while prior to coming to Withee where he spent a year and then returned to Seward, Alaska. Here he was a member of the American Legion and Elks Lodge. He remained in Seward for seven years when he moved to Waukegan, Ill., where he has since made his home being employed with Abbott Laboratories.

Venet never married, but his passing is mourned by two sisters, Mrs. James (Lee) Barrenbrugge and Mrs. Douglas (Eleanore) Gould, both of Wadsworth; and four brothers, Elmer of Withee, Arnie of North Chicago, Ill., Edward of Elmhurst, Ill., and Orville of Embarrass, Minnesota.
