Barber, Dr. Joseph Lanning Jr. (
24 Mar 1864 - 6 Apr 1940)

Dr. Joseph J. L. Barber, 76, passed away at his home in Marathon Saturday, April 6, 1940, after a brief illness.

He was former state senator and assemblyman and was prominent in Progressive Party politics.

Dr. Barber began his practice of medicine in Kaukauna in 1896 and resided here (Greenwood, Clark Co., Wis.) for a number of years, leaving here to go to Marathon in 1906, where he has since resided.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Otto Abel
(Mildred Mary Francis, 9 Jan 1902-29 Sep 1976 M. Otto Abel) of Wausau, and Mrs. Harry Small of Virginia, Minn., and one son, Earl Barber of Fond du Lac, and a brother Albert of Halsey, Oregon.

*Dr. Jospeph Lanning, Jr. was the son of Dr. Joseph Lanning Sr. & Frances Elizabeth Demouth.  His first marriage was to Lucina Mae Fadner (23 Jul 1862, Hayton, WI-1925, Ward, SD)

Barber was born on March 24, 1864 in Hayton, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 1899, he married Ella Webb. Their daughter, Mildred Barber Abel, became a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. It marked the first time a father and daughter served together in a state legislature in the history of the United States. Barber was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, as well as Modern Woodmen of America.



After Barber first began practicing medicine, he became Health Officer of Greenwood, Wisconsin and Coroner of Clark County, Wisconsin before moving to Collins, Wisconsin. He moved to Marathon City, Wisconsin in 1906 and opened a practice and later a pharmacy.

After serving as President of Marathon, Wisconsin, Barber was elected to the Senate in 1922, where he served two terms. He was also a delegate to the 1920 Republican National Convention.  Barber was first elected to the Assembly in 1925 and was re-elected in 1928 and 1934. He was a member of the Progressive Party. In addition, he was a member of the Marathon County, Wisconsin Board of Supervisors from 1924 to 1925 and again from 1931 to 1932.

He died at his home on April 6, 1940 and is buried in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Dr. Joseph Lanning Barber (Rep.) was born in the town of Charlestown, Calumet county, Wisconsin, March 24, 1864. Educated in the common and high schools. Finished medical course in 1896 and practiced medicine and surgery since that time in Wisconsin. Member of Marathon County Medical Society and their vice- president 1922. Member of Wisconsin Medical Association and the American Medical Association. Has been president of the Marathon City Telephone Company for five years. One of the organizers of the Merchants and Farmers State Bank and was the first vice-president of same in this city, also a director. He was the organizer of the Hatley State Bank in Marathon County, and has been director and vice-president of the bank since its organization. Was elected by a majority of 7,000 in the Eighth Congressional district as a delegate to the National Republican convention at Chicago in 1920. In the 1922 election he received 11,308 votes to 3,44 8 for Ralph E. Smith (Ind. Rep.), and 2,456 for A. J. Plowman (Ind. Dem.). His 31 yr. old wife (Ella Webb Barber, Sep 1878-1949), the recipient of this postal) was the Sect. of the local lodge. Their daughter Mildred was 8 yrs. old (9 Jan 1902-29 Sep 1976 M. Otto Abel)
