Rollins, Samuel (1845 – 5 Jul 1906)

Death of an Old Soldier

Samuel Rollins, Who Served in the Civil War, Passes Away After Years of Suffering

The death of Samuel M. Rollins, occurred at his home in this village, July 5th. Mr. Rollins, who was a veteran of the civil war, was born in Maine in 1845, coming to Fairchild in 1869. In 1884 he was married to Annie Waterphul, who survives him. Seven children were born to them, five of whom are still living, the youngest being nine years of age.

Mr. Rollins, as a result of his exposure in the army, has been a great sufferer for many years from a very painful form of rheumatism and heart trouble, terminating in dropsy. He bore his long illness with remarkable cheerfulness and fortitude, though he had often been heard to remark that death could only come as a welcome relief.

Mr. Rollins was an upright, honest citizen, always taking an interest in public affairs until compelled, by ill health, to retire from all active life.

He was, at one time, a member of the town Board of Supervisors. Mr. Rollins has resided here continuously for thirty-seven years and leaves many friends to mourn his taking away.

The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the house. Rev. B.F. Laukandt officiating. Interment in the village cemetery.
