Peters, Walter A. (14 FEB 1924 - 21 APR 2013)

Walter A. Peters, 89, Medford, died on Sunday, April 21 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where he had been a patient the past two weeks.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 26 at 11 a.m. at Medford United Methodist Church, with Rev. Kyochul Shin officiating. Interment of his cremated remains will take place at Christ Lutheran Halverson Cemetery in Menomonie at a later date. Pallbearers are Steve, Scott, Emily, Heather and Cordell Piller and Andy, Jesse and Kenneth Kane.

Visitation will be held at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford on Friday from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Walter Peters was born on February 14, 1924 in Andalusia, Ala., to the late Walter Emil and Mary Susan (Cantline) Peters. He attended Alabama and Florida schools. He served in the United State Navy during World War II.

In 1946 in Chicago, Ill., he married Yvonne Voight, and they were later divorced. He married Juanita Mixon in Fairhope, Ala., who preceded him in death in 2009. He worked as a car mechanic and meat cutter for most of his life. He moved to Wisconsin in 1947, then to the Medford area in 2009.

He was a member of Joy Tabernacle of Fairhope and attended Medford United Methodist Church. He enjoyed reading the Bible, playing on the computer, spending time with family, playing cards and games, and growing flowers.

Survivors include two daughters, Glatha Smith of Medford and Sandra (Larry) Tank of Gleason; a brother, Edward of Mobile, Ala.; four grandchildren, Steve (Cathern) Piller, Scott (Kristy) Piller, Maxine (Kenneth) Kane and Russell Tank; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents and second wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters and a son-in-law, Terry Smith.
