Pope, William E. (17 May 1895 – 24 June 1960)

Herbert Lambert, Marathon county coroner, ruled that the death Friday afternoon of William E. Pope of the town of Texas, Marathon county, age 65, was caused by a self-inflicted shotgun wound.

Pope was discovered in his home Friday afternoon around 4:00 o’clock by his wife, Lucille, and a daughter, Mrs. Anthony Marcis, who lives next door. They had left him alone earlier in the afternoon to do some shopping in Wausau.

Chief Deputy Sheriff John Luebbe, investigating the death, was told by the widow that Pope had been despondent over his health. He had been seriously ill during the past year and had had several operations.

The time of death was set at around 2:00 o’clock.

Pope was born in the town of Holton May 17, 1895, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Pope. He married Lucille Liberty in Medford Feb. 25, 1918 and they moved to the town of Texas in 1929 where he entered a partnership in a cattle buying firm. He retired when his health deteriorated. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Surviving besides his widow and daughter are a son, Clyde Pope of Waukegan, Ill.; three brothers, Grant Pope of Stetsonville, Clyde Pope of Dorchester and Eugene Pope of Chicago; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Brecke of Medford, Mrs. Wesley Froland of Mendelin, Ill., and Mrs. Morris Ballise of Chicago; three grand children.
