Dobbe, Walter J. (1936? – 11 Sept. 1957)

A head on collision between an automobile and a tractor pulling a load of lumber on Highway 49 in the village of Galloway in the town of Franzen on Wednesday morning at about 1:15 o’clock caused the 14th traffic fatality thus far this year on Marathon county highways.

The crash victim, Walter J. Dobbe, age 21, a Rosholt tavern operator, died Wednesday morning about 7 o’clock at the Memorial hospital, Wausau. He was taken to the hospital in the municipal ambulance with a broken leg, broken arm, lacerations, and many bruises and internal injuries.

Investigating traffic officers reported that Dobbe was driving north on Highway 49 when his car hit the semi-tractor and trailer driven by Melvin A. Puls, an employee of the Polar Mfg. Co., Pearson, as the heavier equipment was proceeding south on the highway. The two vehicles met on a sweeping curve in the village.

The county coroner, Herbert Lambert of Edgar, was to conduct an investigation later to determine if an inquest is to be held.
