Grassl, Marie Caroline (January 16, 1921 - July 6, 2009)

Marie Caroline Grassl, age 88 of Connell, Wash., passed away July 6, 2009, of advanced Leukemia.

She was born January 16, 1921 and was raised with 10 siblings on a dairy farm in

Stratford.

An avid lover of music, Marie taught herself to play guitar and piano. She and a couple of brothers formed the Stratford String Pickers band to play at the local dance halls. In her early 20's, Marie moved to Milwaukee to work for the war effort in a munitions factory.

She met her future husband, Ludwig, at a dance. Thus began a four-year courtship

through correspondence while Ludwig served his tour in Europe during WWII. After his return they were married on February 7, 1946. They traveled out west to begin farming in Mesa, Wash. During their 52 years of marriage they raised their family and farmed both the Mesa and Connell areas before retiring and moving to Connell.

Marie was actively involved at both St. Paul's Church in Eltopia and St. Vincent's Church in Connell as a member of the Altar Society, teaching religious education and serving as Eucharist minister. She was also a member of the PTA while her kids were in school and volunteered at the Connell Community food bank.

Marie is survived by sons, Richard, Pasco and Marv (Anne) of Connell; daughter Regina of Connell and Mary Carol (John Holt) of Vancouver, Wash.; seven granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Gregory; husband, Ludwig; her parents; three brothers; and one sister.

Stevens Funeral Home in Othello, Wash., was in charge of arrangements. A rosary was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 9, 2009, and funeral mass was celebrated on Friday, July 10, at 10 a.m. both at St. Vincent's Parish in Connell.

Memorials are suggested to St. Vincent’s Memorial fund, P.O. Box 1030 Connell, 99326 or the Connell Downtown Development's Mural Fund, C/O Molly Kunkel, P.O. Box 500, Connell, in Marie’s name.
