Mellenthin, Frank Sr. (21 Mar. 1859 - 27 Feb. 1937)

Spencer - Funeral services for Frank Mellenthin Sr., 77, who died of pneumonia Saturday morning, were conducted this afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran church, preceded by short rites at the home. The Rev. A. C. Stapel, pastor of the church, conducted German services at the home, and English services at the church. Burial took place in the North cemetery.

Six grandsons acted as pallbearers. They were Arthur Schwantes, Gordon Ewald, Raymond Mellenthin, Norbert Mellenthin, Norman Krause, and Norman Mellenthin. Floral tributes were in charge of five granddaughters, Mrs. Albert Schultz, Mrs. William Eckes, Mrs. Leonard Cramer, Erna Schwantes, and Eleanor Mellenthin. Mr. Mellenthin was a native of Germany, having been born there on March 21, 1859, in Kitzerow, Pommerania. When he was 19 years of age, he came to America with his parents and lived for a short time in Dodge county before coming here. They purchased a farm four miles northwest of Spencer, in the town of Unity.

On Dec. 14, 1882, he was married to Miss Albertina Seefeldt at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Spencer. The couple resided on the farm until they retired and built their present home in Spencer about 15 years ago. Their son, Arthur, now manages the farm. Mr. Mellenthin was active in township affairs, having held various offices, and was a member of the school board. On Dec. 14, 1932, Mr. and Mrs. Mellenthin celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. Mellenthin, who has been an invalid for a number of years, was unable to attend the funeral today.

Surviving besides his widow are four sons, Frank, Albert and Arthur Mellenthin, Spencer, and Otto Mellenthin, Marshfield; four daughters, Mrs. Martha Schwantes, Mrs. Amanda Krause, Spencer; Mrs. Amelia Ewald, Unity; and Mrs. Anna Geil, Milwaukee. Thirty-seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren also survive, as do two sisters, Mrs. Herman Schwantes and Mrs. Louisa Voth, Spencer. A daughter, Ida, and a son, Herman, preceded him in death.
