SPENCER - George Schwantes, 88, of 209 W. Main St., Spencer, died at 4:10 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer, with burial in West Spencer Cemetery. The Rev. William Ruhbusch will officiate.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday at Rux Funeral Home, Spencer.

He was born Dec. 29, 1891, in Milwaukee. He married Louise Wellnitz Dec. 5, 1912 at Spencer and farmed in the town of Brighton until retirement in 1942. They then moved to Spencer. The couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in December 1977.

He was on the Brighton school board and served on the council of Trinity Lutheran Church, of which he was a member.

Surviving are eight sons, Donald of Route 1, Spencer, George Jr. of Myrtle Creek, Ore., John of Spencer, Leonard of Friday Harbor, Wash., Elmer, Karl and Frank, all of Anchorage, Alaska, and William of Port Edwards; two daughters, Mrs. Violet Lien of Janesville, and Mrs. Carolyn Melim of Westmont, Ill.; 33 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Griepentrog of Colby, Mrs. Elizabeth Nelson of Chippewa Falls and Margaret Dorek of Minneapolis.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, who died June 7, 1979, three brothers and two sisters.
