Funeral services for Mrs. Sophia Mittelstadt, 76, of Abbotsford, whose death occurred unexpectedly Feb. 28, were held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the First Presbyterian church at Abbotsford.  The Rev. Charles Glidden conducted the services.  Miss Dorothy Kieser was organist and accompanist for Robert L. Benson, who sang, “I Know of a Sleep in Jesus’ Name”.

The pallbearers for the interment which was made in the Abbotsford cemetery were Royal Archambo, George Kelsey, G. G. Kieser, Frank and James Nikolay and Ned Sterling.

Mrs. Mittelstadt, who has been spending the past several winters with her children, was in California with two of her daughters.  Her death occurred unexpectedly at 9 a.m. in a doctor’s office in Los Angeles.  The body lay in state at the Polnaszek Funeral Home at Abbotsford Monday from 9 a.m. until noon when it was taken to the church.

Mrs. Mittelstadt was born Sophia Kramer Sept. 20, 1887, in Germany.  She was married to Elias Mittelstadt in Chicago Sept. 21, 1904.  In 1913 they came to Abbotsford.  Mr. Mittelstadt died in 1943.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving her are five daughters and three sons:  Mrs. Geraldine Langdon, Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Vern (Norma) Smith, Mt. Prospect, Ill., Mrs. Norman (Lillian) Herstad, Rome City, Ind., Mrs. Alva (Lois), Swoboda, Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Nicholas (Marion) Belling, Ft. Wayne, Ind., Wilber (Tux) Mittelstadt, Palatine, Ind., Alfred (Bill) Mittelstadt, Bluffton, Ind., and Bruce Mittelstadt, Poneto, Ind.

There are 18 grand children and 10 great grand children.

All of the children with the exception of the two daughters in California were present for the funeral of their mother.
