Simonson, George Elwood (4 August 1921 – 8 February 2010)

 

George Elwood Simonson of Hixton went to be with the Lord Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, in his home under the care of the Black Rive Hospice.  He was 88 years old.

 

George was born Aug. 4, 1921, in rural Taylor, Town of Springfield, Jackson County, to John and Anna (Fenney) Simonson.  He graduated from Hixton High School in May of 1939.  George married Sharon Mortenson Sept. 8, 1962.  George farmed in Curran Township all of his life until his retirement in 2000.

 

He loved his family very much and enjoyed spending time with them.  He always wanted to have candy on hand for his grandchildren.  He was a very caring person.   He was always willing to lend a helping hand to neighbors, friends and family.  He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling clean jokes. He also enjoyed watching sports and cheering for the Cubs, Brewers, Packers and Cowboys.  He was an avid boxing fan.

 

In addition to his wife, Sharon of 47 years, he is survived by his children, James (Greta) Simonson of Taylor, JoAnn (Peter) Laufenberg of Alma Center, Janell (Todd) Hemauer of Wausau, and David (Laura) Simonson and Dwight (Kristyl) Simonson, both of Hixton; his very special grandchildren, Rachel, Megan, Bradley, Brady, Betsy, Jake, Jonah, Jude, Grace, Hailey, Hunter George, Dakota, Shenoa; his “adopted grand-daughter,” Jazmin Medina; and his great-granddaughter, Kylie.  He is further survived by his brother, Daniel (Marion) Simonson of Hixton, his sisters-in-law, Mabel Simonson of Taylor and Gloria Simonson of Blair; besides many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

 

George was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Arnold, Orville and Earl; his sister, Dorothy Peterson; sister-in-law, Rhena Simonson; and brother-in-law, Norman Peterson. 

 

Funeral services for George Elwood Simonson will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Taylor Lutheran Church with Reverend Benjamin Ahles-Iverson officiating.  Burial will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery, rural Taylor.

 

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, and also one hour prior to services at the church.

 

Casket bearers will be Bradley Laufenberg, Brady Laufenberg, Jake Hemauer, Dakota Turner, David Simonson, Jim Simonson and Dwight Simonson.  Honorary bearers will be Rachel Simonson, Megan Simonson, Betsy Laufenberg, Grace, Hailey and Hunter Simonson, Shenoa Simonson, Jonah and Jude Hemauer, Peter Laufenberg and Todd Hemauer.

 

Memorials are preferred to the Black River Hospice or Taylor Lutheran Church.
