Ernest S. Sylla, 75, of Arcadia died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009 at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Nursing Home in Arcadia.

He was born Dec. 26, 1934, in Whitehall to Frank and Mageline (Slaby) Sylla. Ernie attended school in a one-room school house in Independence. He worked on the family farm and married Darlene Kreibich June 22, 1957.

He started his electrical business in 1969 and in 1979, Ernie’s Electric moved from a home office to Wilson Avenue in Arcadia to expand the growing business. He was a well-respected and successful businessman, father and friend and a proud veteran of the U. S. Army.

Ernie enjoyed the outdoors: fishing, camping, ATV’s, snowmobiling and campfires. He also enjoyed watching the races, both local and national. Ernie was a skilled carpenter and built nearly everything himself. He was an advocate for the local community and supported several of the community’s businesses and events.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Arcadia; four children: Debra (Tim) Smith of Arcadia, Pamela Sylla of Hixton, Lynn (Brian) Holzworth of Rollingstone, MN, and Donald (Kristin) Sylla of Arcadia; six grandchildren, Jessica and Leslie Smith, Melissa Sylla, Nathaniel and Carson Holzworth, and Cameron Sylla; two great-grandchildren, Quenton and Trent Smith; mother, Mageline “Maggie” Sylla of Arcadia; and one sister, Betty Jane (Roy) Bechly of Alma.

Proceeding Ernie in death was his father, Frank Sylla; brother, LaVerne Sylla; daughter, Sandra Sylla; and son, Ernest Jr.

Ernie’s sense of humor, kindness and wisdom will be missed. His memory will live on in our hearts.

A service with military rites to celebrate Ernie’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at the Wozney-Killian Funeral Home, Arcadia, with Sister Rose officiating.
