James W. Hewitt, 81, of Lindsey died Tues. morning, May 5, 2009, at the Palliative Care Unit of Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Fri. at Grace Lutheran Church in Nasonville.

Visitations will be Thur. from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rembs' Funeral Home (300 S. Oak Ave. - Marshfield, WI) and again Fri. at the church from 10 a.m. until time of the services.

James W. Hewitt, 81, of Lindsey died peacefully with his family at his side Tues. morning, May 5, 2009, at the Palliative Care Unit at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Fri., May 8, 2009, at Grace Lutheran Church in Nasonville with the Rev. Jeanne L. Warner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Benjamin, Eric and Wade Stichert, Craig Griesbach, Todd Anderson and John Franseen serving as the pallbearers. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1866 of Marshfield.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Rembs' Funeral Home (300 S. Oak Ave. - Marshfield, WI), and again Fri. at the church from 10 a.m. until time of the services.

Jim was born June 28, 1927, in Flint, Mich., to Marvin and Crystal (Hahm) Hewitt. He moved to Lindsey at the age of 4 and lived there until the time of his death. He attended the Lindsey School and graduated from Marshfield Senior High. Jim served in the U.S. Navy aboard a dry dock in Guam during World War II.

James was united in marriage to Evelyn Ebert on Sept. 28, 1946. He worked with his father at Hewitt's Meat Processing in Lindsey, purchased the business in 1959 and operated it until his retirement in 1995. He also helped his father run C&H Cranberry Marsh and later was partners in Crawford Creek Cranberry Marsh.

Jim was a member of the American Legion Post 54, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1866, Wisconsin Conservation Congress, F.F.A. Alumni, Marshfield High School Agriculture Advisory Committee, and the National Farm Medicine Fundraising Committee. Jim was also involved in Marshfield Elks Lodge 665, Ducks Unlimited and the Whitetails Unlimited. James was past director and also past president of the Wisconsin Association of Meat Processors and the American Association of Meat Processors, past director of the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation and of M&I Bank.

Jim traveled to Nicaragua, working with the Partners of America to establish a slaughterhouse there. He also judged an International Meat Product Show in Gent, Belgium. In 1993, he was inducted into the Cured Meats Hall of Fame. He also received the Outstanding Service Award from the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation and the Meritorious Service Award to Agriculture and Rural Life from the University of Wisconsin College of Agriculture and Life Science. In 1986 and 1996, James and Evelyn shared the honor of receiving the Meritorious Service Award for their leadership in the meat industry in the United States.

Jim was an avid outdoors man. He loved to hunt and fish, hunting in Canada, the Dakotas and Alaska.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn; three daughters, Diane (Peter) Hagen of Appleton, Janet (Paul) Stichert of Chili and Barbara (Tom) Tasse of Lindsey; six grandchildren, Benjamin and Wade Stichert, Eric (fiancee' Tammy Petcher) Stichert, Sara (Craig) Griesbach, Erin (Todd) Anderson and Amanda (John) Franseen; two step-grandchildren, Jay (Lorie) Hagen and Joy (Dan) Wilds; and four great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. He is further survived by a brother, Richard (Betty) Hewitt of Minocqua. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a step-grandchild. Memorials may be given as an expression of sympathy to Grace Lutheran Church in Nasonville.
