Hallstrand, Herbert Elmer (July 11, 1927 - October 23, 2010)

Herbert Elmer Hallstrand, 83, Township of Ogema, died on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2010 at Wausau Aspirus Hospital, with his family at his side.

He was born on July 11, 1927 in the Township of Ogema, the son of Elmer H. and Alice (Dahlen) Hallstrand.

He spent most of his life in the Prentice/Ogema area. He attended school at the Moerner Road School, the Larkin School and then the Prentice High School. He served his country in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952 in Germany as a tank operator, a duty he was very proud of.


He was married to Joyce Krueger on November 24, 1951 in Medford. They celebrated over 57 years together.

He was employed as a logger in Minnesota, on road construction as a heavy equipment operator, for the Medford Fur Food Co. from 1953 to 1964, and then for Prentice Hydraulics/Omark Industries from 1964 until the time of his retirement in 1990. He was also an expert horseman who did farrier and horse care until ill health forced him to turn clients away in 2009. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed running his dogs after raccoons with his family and deer hunting.


He is survived by his wife, Joyce, Township of Ogema; nine children, Karey (Les) Smetak, Mosinee, David (Monica) Hallstrand, Prentice, Barbara (special friend Norman Obrimski) Dassow, Mosinee, Gale (Tom) Klingelhoets, Estille Springs, Tenn., twin daughters, Tami (Glenn) Villup, Kenosha, and Pami (Larry) Trent, Albuquerque, N.M., Kim (Jesse) Heather, Schwartz Creek, Mich., Holly (Vern) Hakala, Phillips, and Dann (Jenny) Hallstrand, Ogema; 14 grandchildren, Scott (Stephanie) Smetak, Donald (Borrine) Smetak, Emmett and Syrus Hallstrand, Harley Dassow, Matt and Mike Klingelhoets, Ben Trent, Erin Heather, Sam and Dakota Hallstrand, Fallon Villup, and Megan and Zoe Hakala; five great-grandchildren, Katy and Sophie Klingelhoets, and Sabrina, Seth and Andrew Smetak; two brothers, Jack Hallstrand, Prentice, and Randy Hallstrand, Ogema; three sisters, Joyce Swan, Prentice, Rose Nelson, Waukesha, and Joan Johnson, Muskego.

He was preceded in death by his parents.


A private family service will be held at a later date.


A memorial fund has been established.


The Heindl Funeral Home of Prentice is in charge of the arrangements.
