Former Medford resident Lawrence "Larry" A. Bates, 84, died Friday, March 26 at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas.

 

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 10 at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger officiating.

Lawrence “Larry” A. Bates (8 Apr 1925 – 26 Mar 2010)

Former Medford resident Lawrence “Larry” A. Bates, 84 died Friday, March 26 at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 10 at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger officiating.

Lawrence Bates was born April 8, 1925 on the family farm in Eau Galle to the late Harry and Rose Bates. He graduated from Durand High School in 1944. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1944 and was based in the Pacific Theater. He was assigned to the 5th Armored Marine Division as an LVT tank commander.

In 1949 in Durand, he married Mary E. Boehrer, who preceded him in death. After the end of the war in 1946, he attended the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, graduating in 1950 with a BS degree in agriculture education. He taught farm agriculture at Westboro High School from 1950 to 1959. He moved to Medford in 1962 where he worked for Medford Fur Foods as the plant manager, retiring in 1987. In 2007, he remarried Kathleen Schuh, who survives.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, VFW, American Legion, Medford Lions Club and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed working on and restoring antique award-winning cars, tractors and World War II airplanes.

In addition to his wife Kathleen, survivors include four children, Dave (Peggy) of Faribault, Minn., Barb (Tom) Voegele of Sturgeon Bay, Mike (Patty) of Eagle River and Steve (Kathy) of Hudson; three brothers, Carl, Ben and Al; four sisters, Mary, Ester, Virgina and Angie; and 10 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mary, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Fredrick, Joe and Art; and a sister, Roseann.
