Balciar, Bernice G. (Schmidt) (June 24, 1910 - March 26, 2009)

Bernice G. Balciar, 89, Medford, died Sunday, March 29 at Memorial Health Center emergency room in Medford, where she was taken earlier by ambulance.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 2 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Medford, with Rev. Peter Warmanen officiating. Burial will be at Medford Evergreen Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be David, Cam, Peter, Aaron, DJ and Kevin Kalmon, Robert Orazen, Dave and Sam Emmerich. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry, Ryan and John Balciar and Dan Domagala.

The former Bernice Schmidt was born June 24, 1919 in Dorchester to the late William G. and Irene G. (Paul) Schmidt. She attended elementary school in the Town of Hoard. She worked as a housekeeper/nanny in Chicago, Ill.

On September 21, 1940 in Medford, she married George P. Balciar, who preceded her in death on July 18, 1998. They farmed in the Town of Holway for three years, then owned and operated Balciar's Tavern in the Town of Hammel for 21 years. They moved to the Town of Little Black in 1971 where they resided until moving to Medford in April 1998. She was also a seamstress.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and past member of Taylor County Homemakers Club. She enjoyed needlework, crocheting, quilting and reading.

Survivors include a daughter, Laura (David R.) Kalmon of Medford; four sons, Gerald (Bonnie) of Parker, Colo., Robert of Medford, Kevin of Albuquerque, N.M. and Alan (Connie) of Quincy, Wash.; two stepbrothers, Ira (Rita) Schmidt of Paco, Wash. and Lee Schmidt of Marshfield; two stepsisters, Mary Belle Thieme of Spencer and Elanore (Alton) Musich of Longwood; a sister-in-law, Verna Schmidt of Stetsonville; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Beyer; and a brother, Earl.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in her name to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
