Degnitz, Frances (4 Apr 1890 – 23 Jul 1978)

Mrs. Frances Degnitz, age 88 of Curtiss, died at the Clark County Health Center on Sunday, July 23, 1978, at 10:00 p.m.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 26, 1978 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Curtiss, with the Rev. Alan Minshall officiating. Burial followed at the Spencer Cemetery. The Maurina Funeral Home in Abbotsford provided the services.

The former Frances Torke was born on April 4, 1890 at Adell, Wisconsin. She was united in marriage to Carl Degnitz on April 17, 1911 at Adell, and they lived there until 1916, when they moved to Loyal and farmed in that area, and later farmed in the area around Granton.

Her husband passed away in 1937, and she moved to the Village of Curtiss in 1960.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Curtiss.

She is survived by three sons, Walter of Curtiss, Alvin of Marshfield, and Paul of Florida; one daughter, Mrs. Elaine Sura of West Allis; one half-sister, Mrs. Norma Borkenhagen of Adell; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, and two brothers.

Mrs. Edwin (Jeannine) Olson, age 45, of R.R. #1, Unity, died at 7:57 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 1978 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 21, 1978 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Unity, with Rev. Elton Moore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The Maurina Funeral Home in Abbotsford was in charge of the arrangements.

Pallbearers were Keith Michlig, Jack Nikolay, Connie Flink, Gerald Harrellson, Ron Brossow and Kurt Hanson.

The organist was Mrs. Myrl Messer and the vocalist was Mrs. Dorothy Neuman.

The former Jeannine Hagen was born on April 24, 1933 in the Town of Unity. She graduated from Superior Central High School and St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Duluth, Minnesota. She married Edwin Olson on August 18, 1956 in Superior.

She was employed as a registered nurse, the past three years at the Havenet Nursing Home in Owen.

She is survived by four daughters, Susan, Nancy, Linda and Lori, all living at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hagen of Unity; and one brother, Thomas Hagen of Rice Lake.

LeAnn Bruchert, age 17, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Bruchert, of Withee, was chosen on Saturday evening, July 29, 1978, the new Miss Fairest of the Fair to reign over the Clark County Fair, which opened this week on Wednesday. She will also be able to compete for the state title in January in Milwaukee. LeAnn was sponsored by Don’s Shell in Withee.

She was chosen out of eighteen young women who participated in the annual event, which was held in the Loyal American Legion.

The girls met at noon on Saturday at the Loyal Legion Hall, where they were interviewed and judged, with the coronation ceremony held in the evening at 9 p.m.

Peggy Albert, daughter of Pat and Jim Albert of Withee, was named the new 1978 Miss Withee on Sunday evening, July 30, 1978, during the coronation dance held in the Withee Elementary school gym.

Peggy, 17, and a student at Owen-Withee High, was escorted by Charles Mengel of Curtiss.

The other contestants for the honored title were Cindy Cardinal, Joan McComb, Jennie Schilz, Debbie Schrom and Linette Stargardt.

Five local area university students are among more the 1,700 students named to the Honor List for the spring semester at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.

Three were seniors, Mary Elizabeth Greschner of Route 1, Owen, Betty L. Speich of West Third Street, Owen, and Richard Lee Boening of Route 2, Withee. The others were sophomores, Mary Ann Tauchen of Route 1, Curtiss and Bethany Jay Andreasen of Route 2, Withee.

Holy Rosary Church, Owen, was the setting for the 12 o’clock noon wedding, which united Miss Patricia Jean German, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren German, Withee, and Martin Walter Hunt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hunt, Chippewa Falls, in marriage on Saturday, July 23, 1978. Music selections rendered during the ceremony were Wedding Song, You Light Up My Life, and Immaculate Mary.

The bride shoes a bridal gown of white silk organza with the bodice trimmed with Venice lace. She wore a Juliet styled cap with floor length veil, and carried a crescent bouquet of yellow rose buds.

Attending the bride as maid of honor was Janice Sorenson, a friend, and the bridesmaids, Sheila German, Owen, Kathy Weideman, Abbotsford, the bride’s sister, Mary Hunt, Chippewa Falls, the groom’s sister.

Attending the groom as best man was the groom’s brother, Herbert Hunt, Chippewa Falls, and groomsmen, Roger Weideman, the bride’s brother-in-law, Daniel Hunt, groom’s brother, of Chippewa Falls, and Michael Figlmiller, Chippewa Falls, a friend of the groom’s.

Serving as ushers were Terry German and Robert Hunt. The ring bearer was Mark Hunt, the groom’s brother, and flower girl was Carla German, sister of the bride.

A reception was held at 4 p.m. at the Quonset Hall at Thorp, with dinner and dance in the evening, to which about 800 were in attendance. The Augustine Trio played for the dance.

The bride is a 1978 graduate of Owen-Withee High School and is employed at Amacher’s Trading Post. The groom is a graduate of the Chippewa Falls High School, and is the manager of Bill’s Surplus in Withee. Following a honeymoon, which took them to Wisconsin Dells, Great America and the House on the Rock, the newlyweds will make their home in Withee.
