Furlong, Amanda (MAY 1859 - 31 DEC 1883)

Died, Miss Amanda Furlong departed this life at the residence of her parents in Neillsville, Clark County, Dec. 31, 1883, aged 24 years and 7 months. She was the oldest child of James and Mary Furlong, and since 1876 she has been the only living child, five others having been called away by death. Her health had been very feeble, and for the last two years she has been but little away from home. For several months she had been very weak indeed, and for two weeks past she failed very rapidly.

Her disease at last culminated in consumption. Hoping against hope, she struggled against the power of disease, almost to the last. On Christmas day she was bright and cheerful, at least for a time, but the end soon came, and many were startled on Monday morning to learn that death had came.

In Neillsville where she had spent all her days, Amanda was a universal favorite, in the Sunday School, in the public school and in the temperance lodge she had hosts of friends. So quiet, so happy, so peaceful was she, that none could do otherwise than love her.

The sorrowful parents have the heartfelt sympathy of the community in this hour of deepest sorrow. Surely a life so happy and so pure will not soon be forgotten.

Her funeral was attended from the residence on Wednesday, by a large number of friends and old associates who took their places in the procession as mourners indeed. A brief discourse was delivered by W. T. Hendren, the pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Neillsville, who had known her so well for many years.
