Frederick Purgett

 

4. Frederick Purgett  (1. Henry, 2, Frederick, 3. Henry )  was born 01 April 1843 in Lafayette twp., Madison Co., In. to Henry & Lydia Mustard Purgett.  On 20 Aug. 1861, he enlisted in the 8th Indiana Infantry, Co., K.  He had enlisted once before but was under age and his parents brought him home. According to his service record, he was wounded 06 March 1863 near Rolla Missouri. Wounded in the right shoulder. When he returned to duty he was promoted to Corporal. He reenlisted on 01 Jan 1864. In Sept. 1864, he suffered a gunshot wound and compact fracture of his left femur at Winchester, Va.  On  31 Oct 1864, he was wounded in the right thigh and on 02 Nov. he suffered a wound to the lift thigh.  He was wounded again in Arkansas and laid in a field for 10 days till they found him, He was discharged the 28th Aug. 1865 in Darian, Georgia.

 

Sometime during this time he married Elizabeth Lydia Andrews.  They had 3 children. Grant b. 1866, Laura Belle b. 1870, and Charles b. 1873. It was at this time that he is listed as a farmer in Sumner Co., Kansas. In 1872 he received a 2/3 disability of $12. Service records show an update in 1888 with his last payment recorded 04 Nov. 1899.

 

Sometime shortly after the birth of Charles in 1873 we believe Elizabeth died. The 2 younger children went to live with Henry and Lydia Mustard Purgett and he took Grant and moved to Fergus Falls Minn. There he met and married Ella Mee .. They are listed in the 1880 census there with their oldest son Sampson age 2 and Grant, from first marriage age 14. Later they moved to Cherokee Co., Ok. Where they farmed and had 4 more children. One who died , Lydia, Mattie, and Amanda.

 

Frederick died 15 Jan. 1900 at a hotel in Danville Il. Where he was to have gone to the old soldiers home.  His body was sent to his brother in Watseka, Il. And is buried in Belmont Cemetery.
