HELEN HUMKE/PAUL R. ROSSMAN MARRIAGE

Paul R. Rossman and Miss Helen Humke, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Humke, were married at 5 o'clock, Thursday afternoon, July 4, 1901, at the bride's home (Greenwood, Clark County). Rev. Joseph Schmalz performed the ceremony in the presence of about fifty relatives and friends. Miss Meda Humke acted as bridesmaid and Alfred Rossman as best man. A sumptuous supper was served after the ceremony and dancing indulged in. They were the recipients of a number of nice presents. On the following day the young couple left for a week's trip in northern Wisconsin, after which they will be at home at Herbster, where Mr. Rossman is foreman for the Two States Hardwood Lumber Co.

Fire Hits Building

SPOKANE (AP) - Fire raced through three floors of a wooden apartment building in downtown Spokane, early Wednesday, injuring two •women—one critically.  Carried from the burning building by firemen, was Helene Rossman, 86. She was hospitalized in critical condition, and hospital officials said she apparently suffered smoke inhalation.  Also under treatment for smoke inhalation was Lola Berry, 64.

Both women were residents of the two-story building.  Firemen said all the building's residents were forced onto the street by the fire which heavily damaged both floors and the basement.  Fire department investigators said the fire apparently started in the basement, but it's cause had not been determined.

Helene had a first cousin, Theodore Kippenhan (my paternal grandfather). I've spoken to her granddaughter Joan (nee Honeywell) Froman who confirmed that  Helen did indeed die as the result of an apartment house fire in Spokane, Washington.  Helen was born in Greenwood and was the sister of Theodore and Arthur Humke.  I admit I forgot to copy the publish date of the newspaper article.  It would have been in January, 1969.

Helen was the widow of Paul Rossman.
