Neuman, Duane W. (11 FEB 1932 - 2 JAN 2013)

Duane W. Neuman, age 80, of Colby, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2013 in the emergency room at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM on Monday, January 7, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Spencer. Rev. Rebekah Tarras and Rev. Kenneth A. Dix will officiate. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Riplinger with full military rites being conducted. Visitation will be Sunday, January 6, 2013 at the church in Spencer from 3PM until 6PM and again on Monday at the church in Spencer from 9AM until time of services. The American Legion Final Salute to Duane will take place at 10:30AM on Monday at the church. Duane's grandsons will act as both his active pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.

The family is being assisted by Life Tributes Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Spencer.

Duane was born February 11, 1932 in the Town of Unity, Clark County, the son of the late Lawrence and Gertrude (Roohr) Neuman. He attended Sunshine School then later Unity High School. After high school he farmed, drove semi-truck and worked at Foremost Dairy in Owen. Duane entered the United States Marine Corps on March 20, 1952 and served his country proudly during the Korean Era. Following his honorable discharge he returned to the area and married Dorothy Kanneberg-Olson on May 14, 1955 in Abbotsford. She survives. Duane owned and operated a dairy farm from 1955 to 1969. He later started Duane's Tech Supply which he owned and operated from 1969 to the present.

His associations included being a longtime and dedicated member of the American Legion Post #358 of Unity where he held the position of post commander almost exclusively from 1973 to the present time. Duane also held the position of Wisconsin State Commander of the American Legion from 1983 - 1984. He belonged to the VFW Post #2227 of Colby and a life time member of the NRA. He was also a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Riplinger. His hobbies included deer hunting, fishing and sharing his time and talents with Badger Boys State School teaching young men about our government and the Constitution of the United States.

Survivors include his bride Dorothy of Colby; his children: Wayne (Karen) Neuman of Colby; Larry (Deborah) Neuman of Tucson, AZ; Sandra (Randy) Kocian of Colby; Suzanne (Larry) Makeeff of Carthage, MO and Lilli-Marlene (Thomas) Weis of Unity; 16 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Duane is further survived by one brother Glen (Vicki) Neuman of Richland Center and two sisters: LaVonne (Gary) Levenhagen of Rock Island, TN and Joel (Daniel) Elmhorst of Neillsville along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, comrades and friends.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, one brother in infancy, one grandson Shayne Neuman and one great granddaughter Heather Ensign at birth.
