Counsell, Susan #2 (12 JUL 1842 - 23 SEP 1917)

Susan Mary Pope was born to Geo. And Mary Pope of Cambridgeshire, England, on July 12, 1842. She was united in marriage to Henry Counsell in October 1858. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Hughes on Pleasant Ridge (Clark Co., Wis.) on Sunday, Sept. 23, 1917. At the age of 12 years she came with her parents to America and they settled in Clark County at a very early day, and joined the small band of pioneers who came to Clark County to hew homes and farms cut of the timber and wilderness. Deceased grew to young womanhood in these environments and early developed the sturdiness of character which marked her through life. One year after her arrival in Clark County Miss Pope married to Henry Counsell and they immediately took up their life's work in marking a farm on the homestead now occupied by O.E. Counsell.

Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Counsell, of whom but four survive their parents. Five died in infancy, Ida Lowe died in 1891 and their father died in 1910. The surviving children are Joseph, O.E. and Mrs. James Hughes of Pleasant Ridge, and William B. of Milwaukee, Ore.

Mrs. Counsell was a woman of exceptional characteristics and temperament. After a long, busy and useful life, she died as she had lived, honored, trusted and loved. She reared her own monument in the hearts of all who knew her while she lived and her life was indeed completed if work all done and well done constitutes completion. Her going casts sorrow over the entire community in which she lived for so many years, for she was ever a true friend, a splendid mother and a noble woman. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon, services being conducted by Rev. Pinney at the Hughes home and interment made in the Neillsville Cemetery. (Neillsville Times)
