Telford, Robert J. (25 NOV 1865 - 18 AUG 1963)

Funeral services were held for Robert John Telford at St. Bernard’s Church in Thorp at ten o’clock on Wednesday, July 21, 1963, with Father Brockman officiating. Five grandsons, Robert, Dominic, Alfred, Jimmie and Billie Telford, and one great-grandson, David Wittek, served as pallbearers. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Mr. Telford passed away at his home Sunday evening, Aug. 18th, 1963 at the age of 97 years, of old age complications. He was born of Irish descent in Bristol Corners, Ontario, Canada on Nov. 25, 1965 to George and Bridgett Telford. He was employed in building the Canadian Pacific Railroad from Winnipeg to Edmonton and came to Eau Claire, Wis. at the age of 18, where he was active in the logging industry, both in the woods and on the river.

“Bob” came to Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) in 1884 where he was barn boss for the Sterling Lumber Co. for the next eight years.

On Oct. 22, 1899 he was united in marriage with Della Asselin in Thorp. To this marriage were born three sons, George of Owen, Wis., Vilas of Thorp, and Raymond of Friendship. The Telfords farmed in the town of Reseburg until retiring and moving to Thorp twenty years ago.

Mr. Telford is survived by his wife and three sons, eleven grandchildren, and twenty-nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his three brothers and two sisters.

Friends and relatives attended from La Crosse, Milwaukee, Wis. Rapids, Stevens Point, Adams-Friendship, Eau Claire, Gilman, Hayward, Withee, Owen, Lublin, Abbotsford, Cadott, Greenwood, Wausau and St. Paul.
